36% of moms aware of masturbating

I recently saw data showing 36% of moms knew their early adolescent son had begun masturbating in 1991.

My question for the moms and dads on this site is,
"how did you find out/realize that your early-teen was masturbing?"

i remember our doctor asking me at around age 10 "do you masturbate? are you masturbating?" something along those lines... my mom who was in the room during the exam said "no, not yet" before i could answer. i had no idea what masturbating was! how did my mother know that i did or didn't??? side note: i can't ever ask her. long story.

I'm guessing the 36% of moms in 1991 only found out by catching them???

I was given a book. I was told to tell my mom once i had finished reading chapter "x", when I did she asked if I had any questions. the whole set-up made it clear that chapter "x" was WAAAY taboo

I was just gonna add that... 36% sounds more like it'd be the percentage who caught their kids. I can't imagine any enlightened modern day parent not actually knowing it's gonna happen.

i agree. i would expect parents to know that boys will masturbate.

i think the 36% was refering to parents that knew once their son had begun ma

sturbating or knew for certain that they were masturbating, rather than a more general idea that their son is probably masturbating.

I started when I was 5 years old. Don't remember ever being caught though my grandmother nearly did catch me once. If she put 2 and 2 together she never said. Hopefully, I'm not reviving a dead thread here... I started attending church at around 9 or 10. Naturally, when puberty hit, I was all over myself trying to figure out how I work. Unfortunately I had to rely on a book and that fifth grade orientation of the male body... Ironically, it wasn't the pastor or youth director but my own mother who told me of the "dangers" of masturbation. So once I found out how to do it, I made sure to never get caught.
