77 years ago the Allied Forces began the assault on the beaches of Normandy that would eventually lead to the liberation of Europe.
By August Paris would be liberated, by the years end freedom would be in place but the horrors of war exposed, the concentration camps reported on.
Then began the blame game and the re-writing of history.
The war, according to the media in recent years was the forces of the free world against the Nazi's.
Yet there were millions of other Germans caught up, those serving in the forces, supply the arms and the food and the moral support who all went out and praised, lauded Hitler.
After the war it became very much them and us, the people against the elite, the German people becoming experts in becoming the victims of suffering not those responsible for suffering.
As so, over time the world forgave, put it down to human frailty and having an imposingly charismatic leader.
But the world must not forget, the world must learn, the world must see that much the same sort of thing is happening all round them.
A leader comes from the rear promising "the world", and, because he has no political baggage, maybe even no political experience at all the people see him as a saviour, something new, a modern day evangelist.
He gathers round his the same sort of extremists eager to hang on to his coat tails, bucks the trend and slowly but surely entrances all who come within reach, those eager for change, for hope, for something new.
When eventually they get the leader they choose hey realise he is just wind and gas, but, because he says things they like, they support him. As time goes by and his enemies try to dislodge him but fail and are hustled into a nether world. H he he becomes unhinged, his mental capacity goes and his only understanding is that he is right, everyone else is wrong. Yet, even at this stage he still wields enormous power and sway and so his cohorts, while knowing he is unhinged and dangerous, are unable to act for fear of retribution. So he hangs on to power and plots his return but all the time endangering the very nation he once said he would make great.
Even at the Berlin Bunker in 1945 this faithful still stood by as finally the madman took his own life, his followers also took the same irrevocable step knowing that death was preferable to standing by in life still supporting a maniac.
All this is why, 77 years on its still a good reason to remember the lessons we should have learned and look round and see the world leaders who have followed ion more or less the same steps as Hitler.
We must not forget that power doles damage to en's brains, causes damage to men, causes damage to countries.
Power is a addiction.
Never forget.
