Where are the charts????

Today the Austrian and German minister for interior have met. They made clear Italy should make sure that less refugees would enter the Italian coast. Therefore Italy should make a similar deal with Lybia like the EU did with Turkey...

Interesting is, while all the refugees arrived in Germany, the German government was talking about a EU solution and quotas for arriving refugees...
Now it looks like Germany wants to leave Italy all alone

Asylum seeker boat sinks off Libya, 84 missing, the International Organisation for Migration says
Updated about 2 hours ago

Twenty-six people were rescued from the boat, which sank on Friday, and were questioned later.

"According to testimonies gathered by IOM in Lampedusa, 84 people went missing," IOM spokesman in Italy Flavio Di Giacomo wrote on his Twitter feed.

Earlier on Saturday, Italy's coastguard said an Italian cargo ship had rescued 26 migrants from a flimsy boat sinking off the coast of Libya but voiced fears that tens more could be missing.

Gambia-Senegal border still closed over levy dispute

The border crossing between Senegal and Gambia has been shut for the last two months ever since Senegalese truck drivers refused to pay higher fees imposed by Gambia.

This has led to massive traffic jam on the border.

Gambia's president is accusing Senegal of breaking international law and is appealing for help from neighbouring countries.

Nicolas Haque reports from Karrang at Gambia-Senegal borders.

OPINION

Refugee crisis: When is a tragedy a massacre?

The recent drowning of 500 refugees and migrants in the Mediterranean Sea was not only preventable, but arguably caused by policy. A policy known colloquially as "Fortress Europe", designed to make the journey to Europe as difficult as possible for asylum seekers.

The European Union's two-faced approach to human rights has rarely been so crudely apparent as in its treatment of refugees. Article 4 of the European Convention on Human Rights is unequivocal (PDF). "Collective expulsion of aliens is prohibited." That is the full extent of the article. It is not qualified or mitigated in any way, so self-evident is the principle taken to be.

That's the question...
I guess we already crossed the border from tragedy to massacre.

This guy is a Dick, no, Cock. How about we place some of these guys..refugees, on the dairy and beef farms we are selling to the Chinese at an extraordinary rate. Yes Australia has just signed a contract for 50 Billion dollars for ten new subs to protect Australia.

Starting a fleet of 12 offshore patrol vessels in 2018, a fleet of Frigates in 2020, and the Subs soon after. Why, when we are selling our ports, and lucrative, prime pastoral land to overseas interests. Just who are we building these ships for to protect what??????

European Governments Are Arresting Refugee Crisis Volunteers

By Mark Wilding

May 3, 2016
From the column 'VICE Long Reads'

refugee-crisis-volunteers-prosecution-lesbos-kos-idomeni-body-image-1462271007-size_1000.jpg

Photo: Team Humanity

From the end of Eric Kempson's driveway, the features of the Turkish hillside across the sea can be made out clearly with the naked eye. A former safari park keeper, Eric moved with his wife Philippa to the Greek island of Lesbos nearly 17 years ago. Now an artist, he sells sculptures and paintings to tourists from a workshop at their home by Eftalou Beach.

"We did have a bit of a quiet life for a while," he tells me. Not any more. The Aegean Sea separates Lesbos from Turkey by less than six miles here, a distance which must seem tantalizingly short to the groups of families and young men who gather on the opposite coast and prepare to make the crossing to Europe.

If all goes well, an hour's boat ride is their only barrier to a new life, one which they hope will be free of the pain and despair which has driven them from homes in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and beyond.

The brevity of the crossing lends it an air of safety which can be grossly misleading. For anyone out on the water in an overloaded dinghy with an unreliable motor, a small change in conditions can quickly lead to tragedy. This year alone, the International Organisation for Migration estimates 375 people have died attempting to make the crossing.

Boats carrying refugees have been landing on this stretch of coastline since Eric and Philippa first arrived. For many of those years, the landings were sporadic and went largely unnoticed by most of the island's population. That all changed around 18 months ago, when the escalating conflict in Syria saw millions of people displaced from their homes.

Manus Island detainees launch High Court bid to be moved to Australia

Exclusive by the National Reporting Team's Natasha Robinson and Sam Clark
Updated about 3 hours ago

More than 700 asylum seekers held on Manus Island have launched legal action calling on the Federal Government to immediately move them to Australia.

Key points:
  • The asylum seekers want their refugee claims assessed immediately
  • They allege they have been subject to "gross" human rights breaches
  • The group is also seeking an order preventing them being moved to Nauru
The application for an urgent injunction was filed with the High Court on Wednesday by human rights barrister Jay Williams.

It follows last week's decision in the Papua New Guinea Supreme Court which ruled that the Manus Island detention centre breached the country's constitution.

Has anyone proposed interest-free, no-strings "development" loans to key exporters of low-skill immigrants? Or perhaps even outright debt forgiveness? I mean, if your country's economy is shit and your leaders are murderous/incompetent/corrupt psychos, why wouldn't you emigrate to where things are less bad? And if you don't want immigrants coming to your (relatively) rich country, why wouldn't you work extra hard to incentivize immigrants to actually stay in their home countries? Walls don't keep people out, and anti-immigration laws only boost human trafficking and terrorism (high young male unemployment...they go either military or organized crime).

I swear, people in rich countries can be nihilistically selfish. Or maybe it's rich people in any country...

That's politics... it hasn't much to do with logic, but with feelings.

You want everything for yourself, keep everyone out... everything should stay the same and you wonder why things don't improve.

And politicians fear to tell you the truth, because they know if the would, they wouldn't get reelected. That's why they do nonsense politics to give you a good feeling, knowing it don't solve anything.

Looks like people don't learn...
1.5 million official refugees (more likely 2.2 million) at a population of just above 4 million...
Maybe we just wait for the next failed state in this area, for even more refugees ;)

But yes, the question remains, why we can't support those who help refugees, while we refuse to help them.
Even more so after Europe (and the western world) failed to help the refugees (jews) at WW2 and by this let the genocide happen.
It's a shame

killing the refugees in the camps now
not satisfied with ..

all negative reports, because there are never good reports about the treatment of the refugees
but
the UN will do its usual decrying of the situation, in a months time, saying a little how bad it is that this happened
take some consolation in that?
