Inside Story - What can aid agencies do in war zones?

For nearly half a decade, Syrians in the town of Daraya lived under siege, with limited access to food and medicine, at the hands of their government.

On Friday, they received their first food aid delivery since 2012. But then came the barrel bombs. They were dropped by Syrian government helicopters.

But is a new chapter really being opened in aid delivery? And how is siege being used by the Assad regime in this conflict?

AUSTRALIAS TREATMENT OF

Asylum seeker/migrant/refugees

Offshore and off limits: Australia's refugee centres - The Listening Post (Feature)

Published on Jun 12, 2016
For four years now, Australia has been sending a message out to the world: "If you come to Australia illegally by boat, there is no way you will make Australia home."

The refugees who cannot be turned or towed back are taken into custody. Since the so-called processing centres on the islands of Manus and Nauru opened in 2012, nearly 2,000 people have been held there and only 60 have made it out.
In those four years, not a single journalist has made it in.

Australia's offshore 'processing centres' for asylum seekers are shrouded in secrecy and are completely off limits to the media.

Permission to visit the island centres is almost non-existent - some journalists have even reported being chased away at gunpoint after arriving in Papua New Guinea.

Journalists rely on news that has trickled out of the camps for information.

But penalties for the whistleblowers feeding stories to journalists are stiff, reinforcing the media blackout shrouding the asylum centres and the maccabre stories about treatment of refugees within.

The Australian Federal Police have been known to spend hours researching, intimidating and harassing journalists who have worked with whistleblowers in order to reveal their sources.

Under the new Australian Border Force Act, the consequences have reached further heights with jail terms being handed out to offending journalists.

But journalists are still trying to tell Australia's refugee policy story and people on the inside are still blowing the whistle.

Talking us through the story are: Mark Davis, investigative reporter; Paul Farrell, reporter for The Guardian Australia; Paul Murphy, CEO Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance; and Madeline Gleeson, refugee lawyer and author of Offshore: Behind the wire on Manus and Nauru.

How is Australia managing the media war over coverage of the asylum centers?

Niger's youth in crisis: Why hope remains - Talk to Al Jazeera

Published on Jun 18, 2016
In mid-June, the bodies of 34 migrants were found in the Niger desert, 20 of them were children. They had been abandoned by human traffickers.

On June 3, Boko Haram, the armed group battling Western influence, carried out an attack in the Diffa region of eastern Niger. More than 30 soldiers were killed and about 50,000 people were forced to flee.

The people of Niger, a landlocked country almost entirely covered by the Sahara Desert, face unemployment, the threat of armed groups, hunger, poverty and drought. Niger is one of the world's poorest countries and one with the highest percentage of people under the age of 20.

Yet, hope remains for many young Nigeriens who are most affected by the country's lack of opportunities.

In March 2016, three young people in Niamey, the capital, talked to Al Jazeera on what they want to accomplish and the dangers they see as they try to build a future in an uncertain environment.

Abdel Nasser Boubacar, Mamane "Kaka" Touda and Rachida Abdourahamane tell of what it means to grow up in Niger, how they give hope to others and what future they see for their country.

Today Frontex published their suggestion how many people would try to cross the Mediterranean sea, to make it to Europe.

300,000

That's by far the highest number we ever had! Frontex also made clear why they think the number would increase so much. It's the closed borders at Balkan.

Again it becomes very clear that the try "to protect refugees", "to get them away from dangerous pathes to Europe" only pushes them in even more dangerous situations!!!
