The battle for Mosul leaves thousands in despair

Iraqi forces say they've captured two key neighbourhoods in the battle for Mosul that will allow a safe corridor for civilians to escape the city.

The military operation to recapture Iraq's second largest city from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) began last year.

It has forced an estimated 750,000 people to flee their homes.

Stefanie Dekker reports from Erbil in Northern Iraq.

Why Hungary's crackdown on refugees is being criticised? – Inside Story

Published on Mar 19, 2017
A new law has been signed in Hungary to allow the detention of all asylum seekers - including 14 year old children and above.

New fences along the border with Serbia are also planned, to try and prevent a new wave of refugees.

And a new volunteer force called 'Border Hunters' are being trained to patrol borders.

Amnesty International says the new measures are a violation of international law.

Are Hungary's tactics out of line?

How bad is the humanitarian crisis in Mosul? – Inside Story

A humanitarian crisis on the verge of stretching aid agencies to breaking point - that's how the UN coordinator in Iraq describes the situation in western Mosul.

Around 150,000 Iraqis have been forced from their homes during the last month of fighting, with more expected.

Many have found shelter in camps, which aid workers say are overwhelmed.

Iraqi forces are battling ISIL in western areas of Mosul.

ISIL fighters are resisting with car bombs, snipers and drones laden with grenades to slow the Iraqi army advance.

Western Mosul, which includes the Old City, is densely populated with civilians who are caught in the cross-fire.

Will Mosul's liberation end the plight of the displaced?

'Millions of Afghan children are out of school'

Published on Mar 23, 2017

Save the Children says millions of children in Afghanistan will not attend school this year.

Nearly a third of all school-aged children - close to four million - are being kept at home, according to the global charity.

It expects at least 400,000 more to drop out of school over the coming year, due to growing instability and a deepening economic crisis.

It has warned that young Afghans are at risk of exploitation, including child labour, recruitment by armed groups, and child marriage.
