Desperate journeys: For refugees in Europe, daily life is a nightmare

Last few years have seen massive movement of refugees towards Europe, many of them fleeing conflict and poverty.

The refugee and migrant arrival was one of the main topics discussed at G7 meeting held on the Italian island of Sicily last month.

Sicily's proximity to North Africa makes it one of the first ports many arrive in.

In the third part of our three part series, Al Jazeera spoke to some refugees there to find out why they chose to take the dangerous journey.

Laurence Lee reports from Sicily.

Greece urged to not send refugees back to Turkey

Refugee advocates are hoping Greece's supreme court will stop people who have lost their asylum bids from being returned to Turkey, which is not deemed safe for many migrants and refugees.

Greece is one of the countries dealing with a large number of refugees arriving on its shores. As a result, support services from all over the world have set up base on the tiny island.

John Psaropoulos reports from Lesbos.

Gambia: The business of human trafficking - Talk to

According to the United Nations, 26,000 unaccompanied minors crossed the Mediterranean to Europe last year, most of those coming from sub-Saharan Africa were Gambians.

In the past three years, almost 15,000 people lost their lives trying to reach European shores.

Undeterred, young men and women continue to take this route in what the UN's describes as the biggest humanitarian catastrophe of our times.

The UN estimates the illegal trade of smuggling people to be worth more than $35bn, and it is booming.

Despite joint efforts by police forces from Europe and Africa, few smugglers have been arrested or prosecuted.

Mohammed Lamine Jammeh, also known as L-Boy, help many execute this journey. For many, he is a hero. Families save up for years and take loans in order to send one of their children on this journey.

But who profits from this? Do these young men and women know the risks they are taking? How much do they pay for this journey?

Italy threatens to turn away foreign ships with rescued migrants
Italy's envoy to the EU has said it is unsustainable for all migrant rescue ships in the Mediterranean to land on his country's shores. Over 10,000 asylum-seekers have arrived in Italy over the last few days.

More than 120 migrants missing, feared drowned, off Libyan coast
According to survivors, the migrants were stranded at sea after traffickers stole their boat's motor. If confirmed, the deaths will bring the number of migrants killed in the Mediterranean to nearly 2,000 this year.

The survivors - two Sudanese and two Nigerians - said traffickers stole the boat engine several hours after they left the Libyan coast on Thursday.
"They stole the motor - something which has happened a few times recently - and at that point the boat started to take on water and sank," Di Giacomo said.

The government is promising it will have a plan to deal with the situation.
People are running out of patience.

As Italy wakes up to the new influx and faces the prospect of closing its ports can anyone blame them.
The EU is supposed to be united, take joint decisions and yet....
Angela Merkel declared an open border, thousands flocked through daily till suddenly Angela realised what she'd done, however with bolting horses its always to late to bolt the door.
Word spread through Africa that the promised land was there and wanting to embrace all immigrants.
People smugglers were quick to make a profit on human misery.
Officials failed to stamp out this trade preferring instead to take bribes and get rid of the new incomers.
So last year we had a crisis, hundreds of thousands in Greece and Italy and the EU did nothing - oh yes fine words but in reality nothing, Merkel more interested in retaining her top table place than alleviating the misery of the camps or helping with the correct registering/checking of immigrants - an open door for terrorists and associates.
And then winter
and the boats going across, the flow of migrants lessening.
But hello there, a new intercede, the Charity Boats, out there in all weathers with hot tea and life jackets looking for stray boats and broadcasting to all and sundry their positions.
So this summer its going to be hell, already in the last few days 12,000 have arrived, and the charity boats full to overflowing. There are those who believe the charity boats, backed by bleeding hearts, actually arrange to meet up with the smugglers - or at least make it know where they'll be so boats can be set adrift with a good chance of being picked up.
Am I being inhumane, I don't think so, all these poor people being offered and sold a dream, encouraged to come to the EU have no idea of the squalor of the camps, the lack of work and suitable homes, and yet they still come dreaming of falling into the welcoming arms of an Angela Merkel type angel.
Time for a full EU action, patrolling the illegal smuggler waters and returning those boats to port of exit, the EU is full!
But will the EU act, use your common sense, its got a very big carpet and still plenty of room to brush more problems under. Italy should live up to its threat, Greece should follow suit till the EU comes in with man power and cash.
Surely the humanitarian problem is bigger than worrying about who is going to get elected Angela!

It is both a political crisis for the EU and a humanitarian crisis, I am really at a loss to know the best way forward. The refugee problem has fed into something dark and nasty in the collective psyche in several European countries yet at the same time i understand if Hungary and Poland, among others, are wary and fearful.
Doubling our refugee quota here in New Zealand is becoming an election issue, but the modest resettlement programme of a small country at the far end of the world is a drop in the ocean.
I take my hat of to the Turks and Lebanese who carry most of the burden.

I concur @bigmanfan. Here in the antipodes, we're far removed from the daily realities of tens of thousands of people seeking to escape shattered and dysfunctional homelands in the hope of a future free from oppression and poverty. Regrettably, in Australia we have a government that is increasing under threat of being hijacked by ultra-right conservatives who seek to close our borders entirely. While this won't happen, the pressure is making our leaders more cautious on matters of refugee intake, particularly regarding Muslims seeking asylum. Regarding the EU, I am actually hopeful that with Marcon's election - and hopefully with Merkel's re-election - there will be a more strategic approach to addressing the refugee crisis and that this takes into account the undue burden being experienced by Italy in particular. Yes, it's ultimately a no-win scenario politically, but governments that treat people humanely have most to benefit in the longer term.

Rescued migrants describe life at Libya’s detention centres

Published on Jul 16, 2017
Libya is a popular take-off point for migrants trying to get to Europe.

But the journey across the Mediterranean Sea is dangerous; at least 1,200 people have died this year alone while attempting it.

Those who were rescued by Libyan coast guard often end up in detention centres, where some say that they face ill treatment.
