Cuban migrants still stranded in Costa Rica

Published on Dec 23, 2015
Almost 6 thousand Cubans have been stuck here since neighboring Nicaragua shut down the border stopping them on their way to the US. Central American countries have seen a spike in the number of Cubans since the island renewed relations with the United States.A new meeting to solve the issue has been called for December 28. A temporary solution might be at hand but Central American countries fear more Cubans will embark on the journey as long as the temptation of settling in the US remains possible. Alessandro Rampietti reports from La Cruz.

Christmas in the Jungle: It's the Worst Time of Year for Thousands of Refugees in Calais

Syrian/Iraquians in faraway Belgium

Refugees united by power of music

Published on Dec 24, 2015
Many have tried to help refugees rebuild their lives in Europe - but one group is doing it for themselves. They're all musicians, and they have been busy recording a CD to help others in their situation. Laurence Lee reports from Brussels.

It's a dark and chilly evening in the Jungle refugee camp in Calais, France. A young Afghan man has just picked up a gun. He loads it, cocks it, and peers down the barrel at the assembled crowd, knees bent as he oscillates from side to side. He's dressed in jeans and a hooded jacket, with a red scarf tied around his head. His gun is imaginary, but the audience turns silent when he trains it on them.

Between 5,000 and 7,000 people are now living here, making it Western Europe's largest refugee camp and a muddy epicenter for a global crisis. Thousands of men, women, and children, from a spread of nationalities, have all ended up on a patch of land on the outskirts of the northern French port city. Many traveled alone for months. Now dozens sit close together on the ground, watching a man called Yasin miming on a wooden stage.

Yes, refugees can have a positive influence on the economy...
While Germany had around 1.2 million refugees in 2015, the German countries plan to create 50,000 new teacher jobs for the next years.
In 2015 and for 2016 up to 15,000 jobs in the federal administration get created.
Cities, countries and the federation plan to build hundred of thousands of new flats.
All of this is a small boost for the German economy.
Plus, every refugee gets around 350 € per month. This will push the consume as well. (That's 2.5 billions, or 0.1% of the German GDP (0.2% of the consume)) - if there will be another million of refugees in 2016, we would be up to 5 billions.

In total do we expect an extra spending of 20 billions in 2016. That's nearly 1% of the German GDP

Human dignity for stateless on Haiti-Dominican border
Thousands from the Dominican Republic are deported to Haiti camps where cholera is a major problem.

Matt Chandler | 30 Dec 2015 08:11 GMT | Humanitarian crises, Poverty & Development,Dominican Republic, Haiti, Human Rights
Anse-a-Pitres, Haiti - Eugene Toussaint and his wife, Isoline, have seen thousands arrive with their families from the Dominican Republic in the past six months. "They started to arrive on June 17," says the elderly pastor, "and they didn't stop."

Toussaint built his shack on this dry patch of land almost 15 years ago. He left the Dominican Republic after living there for a decade when the land he was tending was taken from him. He told Al Jazeera, "I am
the one who greeted these migrants here. God sent me first."
