I had one of those passionate talks in the men's locker room this Sunday morning and it was all about losing weight.
I know diet makes a difference, but as I was telling these guys I feel I am much stronger and healthier now than before when I was one a stricter diet.
I still watch everything I eat. I focus now on more portion control, but I still limit carbs, fat, sodium and empty calories, but I have put on more weight. I know some of it is muscle, but the majority I know is fat.
SO the guys this morning said I should focus on 60% diet and 40% working out. I also believe i have never given it 40% of my workouts. I told one of these "built" boys that I kinda hold back, because of my fear of injury.
I am reaching out to you "guys" to see what has worked for you. Should I go back to stricter dieting. Should I focus on high healthy foods, which really don't taste all that great? I have heard abut the fasting diets and I think I tried them before, but I could never sustain the weight loss.

Any feedback is appreciated.

the most effective thing I have ever tried is the low carb diet. I lost 60 lbs over a number of months. I went off the low carb diet and started eating what I wanted and gained weight. The low carb diet I have been on has been doctor supervised by a weight loss specialist. It works! First two weeks I lost 10lbs. I did not eat fruit nor milk products. Mainly ate meats and vegetables. Avoided salt and spices. Consumed lots of water. Highly recommend this lifestyle. It worked for me!

Get the notion of "live to eat" out of your head. Rather, think "eat to live". Find other ways than placating your palette to deal with boredom. All those "diets" are bullshit when you're doing them with the goal of eventually stopping to do them.

Thanks for the feedback. I understand the wisdom of eating to live and I strive for that, but I guess I falter. Last year I used to eat steamed plain broccoli medley it was usually hard to eat, so I switched to mixed vegies but they contained carrots and corn, so more carbs, but it tasted so much better than the medley!

I like the ketogenic diet it has work for me acceptably well. I'm down about 80 lbs now down to 17% body fat which makes me feel pretty good. the only downside is you don't eat bread, cakes and you're going to be changing your wardrobe out rapidly because you lose so many inches. now down to a 33 waist waswa 42. It has been a big change

SO the guys this morning said I should focus on 60% diet and 40% working out.

How do you measure 100% of fitness as 60% diet and 40% working out? Does that mean 60% of your fitness budget goes to eating and 40% to membership fees? Or does it mean 60% of your time is focused on diet and 40% on exercise? Effort? Planning?

That approach doesn't make any sense to me. It would make sense to say: Focus 100% of your meal planning, purchasing, prep, and eating on good nutrition, and focus 100% of your exercise on planning and doing the exercises that work best for you.

Maybe he meant that diet matters 50% more than exercise does. Or that nearly 2/3 of your success will be attributed to diet.

The reason why it makes no sense, @twoton , is because it's just yet another gimmick to sell to the gullible masses who do not comprehend or refuse to accept the fact that bad eating habits and bad exercise habits developed during adolescence become ever increasingly worse as one progresses from adolescence into young adulthood and beyond. The reality is that once one leaves adolescence, his or her body begins to deteriorate unless proper diet and exercise are maintained. You can go online to determine what to eat and how to work out. It's not rocket science. Only the people who sell diet and exercise nostrums say that it's complicated.

This still is illogical. That's why everyone is commenting with different ideas of what is meant. But @twoton put it best. You need to focus 100% of your thoughts on what you eat on eating properly (quit thinking about "going on a diet") , and 100% of your exercising on doing things to lose fat without losing muscle mass, which actually means that your exercises must include things that actually build muscle mass. When you lose weight you lose both muscle and fat. Without building muscle to replace that which you are losing, when you inevitably gain the weight back, you will become essentially fatter, even though you may be only at your original weight. Each time you go through these cycles you become proportionally fatter and fatter.

As a trainer an online coach, I'd say it's closer to 80% what you eat and 20% what you do in the gym. Even more so than that, it's about finding the right macronutrients for your body to lose weight. I've yet to find a one size fits all and that's why I work with everyone individually. As well, I LOVE Oreos, brownies, and cereal. I don't cut those items out when I'm trying to lose weight, I just make sure they fit into my macronutrient plan so I can still lose weight, but eat the foods I want and enjoy life.

Curious as to why you would avoid spices?

All it comes down to is energy balance.

Eat in a caloric deficit; burn more energy than you consume and you will lose weight.
