Can i be a dreamer for a moment and say i wish we elect our presidents for only one term. Then they will be forced to have more of an interest in our well being.

I think you mean presidents should have a 1 term limit? I'm not sure that would help, anyway... if they can't be re-elected, why bother doing anything the public would favour if you have to leave office permanently anyway?

I tend to be opposed to political measures taken to solve short term problems at the cost of creating (usually worse) long term problems. The Iraq occupation will be a military problem long after Bush is gone. Ditto for the payments on the debt he's run up.

I've thought about this many times. If people would just vote out the incumbents every election, we could make our own term limits. This is usually how I vote, including local elections. I vote for who ever runs against the current office holder. There are, of course, exceptions...
Yes one shot and their out. I like that. If they fuck up they are gone.

Checks by May or June? Hmmmm.

If the enonomy really tanks in April how much you want to bet they're going to cancel all those checks?

Well. If you look at it that way. I allways see another day. Another ray of hope. Should they sit there and do nothing?

It's a fallacy to believe that governments can do much to overly influence the markets, but there are measures that can be taken.

Giving everyone $600 of their own money to spend isn't a particularly good measure. All that does is add onto the debt (with interest), and if the money is spent on consumer goods, there's ultimately nothing to show for it.

You beat me to the punch posting about this.

This pisses me off royally! :headache: This is the same tactic King George used to win people over when he first got into office. Nobody remembers that Clinton left a surplus, all they remember is that they got an extra $300, 6 months after he got into office.

More importantly where the hell is all this money coming from?! With all the money Washington keeps approving to fund this pointless war and the fact our healthcare and public education systems are failing miserably, we cannot afford this!

Come on people don't be so easily led! This is just a bribe, a tactic so that you will vote Republican in November and run this country completely into the ground instead of just halfway. :12:

You are right about that surplus. Plus we had 8 war-free years under Bill Clinton. I don't care if a farm animal runs on the democratic ticket, I'll vote for it before I'll vote for a Republican in 2008.

No its good for the growth of the economy and for buisness. My state is so over taxed that 86,000 people left last year in record numbers. Can you imagine the lost revenue? What do you think they are going to do to get back that lost money? Thats right raise taxes.....

If the SOB in the white house really wanted to do something to help the economy, he'd tell his rich oil friends to lower the price of gas. THAT would do more for the economy than 100 rebates.

If people invested the money, I'd agree with you. Or if the government gave them any incentive to invest it, even. The way the dollar has gone for the last couple of years, investing in the US has been a terrible decision in absolute currency terms.

The U.S. economy has been running on consumer spending for years now. Another $600/head of consumer spending won't do anything to provide real growth for the economy or businesses. It will add to the debt, though. Unless the gov't plans to devalue their currency in order to wipe out the debt (trust me, you won't like that), adding to the debt at this point is dumb. It looks an awful lot like Bush dogma overriding reality.

The saddest thing about that is NJ is still the most densely populated state in the country.:frown1:

Yeah that'll work. Did you ever hear of supply and demand? Lets say you sold peaches. China want's peaches and will pay $2 for a peach, Eruope will pay $3 for a peach. would you sell your peaches for $3 or sell them to your friends for $.50 a peach. Keep in mind you have a limited supply of peaches. Once they're gone they are gone.

I'd like to know how many illegal aliens with stolen SS # will be getting rebate checks! I'dbe pissed if I made $75,000+ and had to shell out cash to folks that don't pay taxes. What's the point of busting your ass to get ahead?

People don't want to bust their asses, they want handouts. They want tax cuts but services to stay the same. Or they want services they don't use, cut. Or they want to rob Peter to pay Paul.

(Almost) Everyone has a sense of entitlement, (almost) no one has a sense of responsibility. The solution to every problem is to inject money into the economy and worry about the consequences some other time.
