Flashy, your obviously following this closer than I am, but I had heard the reason for so many dead was because when the alarm went off, most people ran for their homes and shelter, which came down ontop of them. Apparently, the alarm was the same as what they used for Hurricanes??

I also want to try to find the video of the dog that sprinted out a few seconds before the earthquake hit. Animals are amazing - and probably about the only early warning we have.

I gotta go to Home Depot and get the rest of the lumber I need before the damn price goes off the chart..... again.

LoL @ Pat Robertson.

You know, Christie, something happened a long time ago in Haiti. And the people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon the third or whatever, and they got together and swore a pact to the Devil. They said, 'We will serve you if you get us free from the French. True story. And so, the Devil said, Ok, it's a deal. And they kicked the French out. You know, the Haitians revolted and got themselves free. But ever since they have been cursed by one thing after another -- desperately poor. That island of Hispaniola is one island. It's cut down the middle. On the one side is Haiti on the other is the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, etc. Haiti is in desperate poverty. Same island. They need to have, and we need to pray for them, a great turning to God, that out of this tragedy, I'm optimistic something good may come, but right now we're helping the suffering people -- and the suffering is unimaginable.

indeed...i cannot imagine how many will die in the aftermath, from lack of adequate medical care...how horrifying to survive the quake, then die from injuries that could have been cared for...

this is a nightmare

Agreed. Also I live in an area home to many 1st and 2nd generation Haitian immigrants. Some of them are close friends and many have relatives they they have not heard from yet. It's truly tragic and it hurts my heart.

The recent 6.5 Earthquake is Cali didn't do much damage, at least it wasn't a big story on the news.

This one is devastating.

Building codes are part of it. But also what a lot of people don't realize is the Richter Scale is logarithmic, not linear. So a 6 is 10X as powerful as a 5. And a 7 is 10X as powerful as a 6. In other words, a 7 is 100x as powerful as a 5. 5.0 is considered the threshold of damage, so this quake is 100X stronger than one just on the threshold of damage.

Now that more pictures and information is finally coming out, it looks even more horrific. Most of Port-Au-Prince looks like it will have to be leveled and rebuilt.

I know the international community will come together to help and I hope they stay after this disaster to help build Haiti to be more then the title “poorest country in the world”.

One of my sister’s work is checking with our local Red Cross on blood donations.

indeed...the city is completely destroyed. :frown1:

My family are OK. They live in the northern part of Haiti. They haven't been affected by the earthquake. But my heart goes out to all my haitian brothers and sisters affected by the quake :(

glad to hear that brad! thank goodness.

have you been able to communicate with them directly? have you heard anything more about the people in the south/port au prince?

thanks goodness that the rest of the country was relatively unscathed.

how truly tragic indeed...to hear the alarm and run right in to the danger :frown1:

i can find that dog video for you...but it was taken in California, during the arcata aarthquake not Haiti...and indeed it is amazing...he senses it a full 4-5 seconds before anyone else.

Terrible and tragic situation still getting worse.

This morning the news commented that they still have no heavy equipment there for moving and digging people out of the rubble so who knows how many are still clinging to life under neath all that debris.

unfortunately, i think that the heavy equipment will be so long in arriving that most of those still trappped underneath will not make it due to lack of water and their injuries...

there will be some, but for children trapped, their tolerance level will be much lower, especially in a place where normal health is so tenuous.

this is awful

Its a terrible tragedy which looks like it will get worse before it gets better, because the much needed aid that other countries are giving to them have to first get to the earthquake stricken area, and that is proving for now to be a major obstacle. My thoughts and prayers go out to the people of that nation.

indeed...so sad that as usual the scammers are out in force

i would recommend Wyclef Jean's "Yele Haiti" organization
also the Red Cross.

I already donated to YELE. Wyclef graduated from the same high school I did and comes back sometimes. Does a tremendous amount of charitible work for Haiti. Also they found one of my friend's grandmother. Unconscious but still alive. Born in Haiti but a U.S. Citizen. Everyone pray for my friend Julie and her family.

glad to hear about your friend's grandma...still hope yet.

on another note, i was going to donate to Yele, but i have since found out that it is not a good idea to donate to them in emergency situations...that is not an indictment of them, becausse they have done wonderful work, but the problem, is that they have no experience in emergency rescue etc...and, because the organization is so relatively small, it has to spend a far greater percentage of what it takes in on overhead (only about 60% is left after adminsitrative and other costs etc.) as compared to an organization like "CARE"...as a result, i instead donated to the "CARE" relief fund.

they do fantastic work when times are "normal"m but they are not a rescue/emergency organization...hopefully, YELE will take that money and donate it immediately to organizations practiced in catastrophic response, as this will be, imo, the best way for YELE to make a difference in this tragedy

The good news is that even late yesterday they were still getting people alive from the rubble including the 15 or 16 month old baby.

The bad news was when the doctor being interviewed said they have so little in medical supplies that they have to let some die who might have had a chance if they had better medical supplies and the hospital hadn' t collapsed.

And the death count just keeps getting worse.

Death toll stands at 230,000 with 20,000 still unaccounted for.

BBC news reports the figure is on par with the number of victims of the 2004 tsunami after the quake in Indonesia.
