will you miss les boîtes de nuit and the dancing ?
I will miss the money, that's for sure. But will I miss being groped by drunks that think I'll follow them home if they buy me drinks? No. Will I miss a job that doesn't allow me to get to bed before 3:00 A.M. when I have an 8:00 A.M. class? Not at all. Dancing is a job that I have a love-hate relationship with.

There's always the chance. There are many people who wouldn't relish the idea of having their children taught by someone who used to get paid to dance near naked. I can't really say that I don't understand that attitude; I do. There's always the thought that working in a sexually oriented field encourages laxity of morals, and who wants someone with a lax moral sense to act as an authority figure over children. Sad to say, being gay could be another strike against me, especially in Redneck Country. Regardless of my academic qualifications or how good I look in a tweed jacket, it's likely that many will deem me 'unfit' as a teacher if they get wind of how I currently earn a living.

I don't foresee moderating to be a problem. I'm staying on at LPSG. Commuting? Four hours round trip five days a week? Uh ... NO!

Ineligible: I missed this thread somehow. :( I'm very happy for you, DMW. The new job may pay less well, but I hope it will be more fulfilling to be able to instil a love of language and literature into at least some of your students. (Don't expect it to be all; and don't expect always to know you have done it. Sometimes the process is a slow one.) And the new job will sit better on your curriculum vitae, too. :)

Mighty_Joe: Reminds me of something I heard (or read) the other day. This kid comes in the school library and walks up to the main desk. "Can I help you, son?" "Yeah...I'm supposed to do this paper on one of Shakespear's plays". "Oh...which one?" 'WILLIAM". ;D

LOL You always seemed educated to me. Too bad I can no longer specifically request you if I ever go to Europe. LOL

Colleges can attract all types, so you'll have some who are taking it just to up their GPA (I've done this with communications and liberal arts classes before.) and a few loons who will flunk out in just a couple weeks, and even a few level-headed students who are actually interested. After a while teaching, you'll even know the difference between the two.
