wait.. is this thing going on today?

or this another attempt to be "defiant, brazen, and mostly just a way to trade phone numbers and STDs"?
You really are a fucking asshole.

The myth that gay men are more likely to acquire an STD is why so many teen girls have HPV. This, "it can't happen to me because I'm not gay," attitude is why so many straight people--especially women--have HIV. It's not 1985 anymore and this isn't grade 5. Grow up--unless you have any hilarious AIDs jokes to entertain us with.

After you've fucked one-too-many of your cheap whores, you'll eat your words.

I support them in everything they do...but I hate strikes.

I don't know what I'll do if some people would strike in my company later...but some would get fired. But here gay people have equal rights, so they won't have to strike here. That's one good thing.

This strategy seems to have come right out of the movie Wedding Wars, which originally aired on A&E about 2 years ago, featuring John Stamos as a gay wedding planner who goes on strike when he learns that the bride's father, the governor of the state, supports and amendment to ban gay marriage. What begins as a one-man strike eventually gets media attention, and soon gay people all across the country decide to join the strike.

The strike is depicted in a light-hearted, humorous, and stereotypical manner. The whole nation is disrupted because hairstylists, florists, flight attendants, party planners, etc. are on strike. Here's more info about the movie:

Wedding Wars (2006) (TV)

YouTube - Wedding Wars (2006) - Movie Trailer

In the movie, the point of the strike, I think, is to disrupt enough straight people's lives as to raise their awareness that:
  • many of the people they know and depend on in their everyday lives are gay
  • gay people make valuable contributions to society and are too often taken for granted
  • straight people take the right to marry for granted, while gay people are denied the basic right to marry the person they love, essentially making them second-class citizens
  • gay people are royally pissed off, and rightfully so, at being denied their rights
I suspect the organizers of today's strike had similar goals in mind, but in order for such an action to succeed, it needs to be BIG--big enough to really gather attention nationwide, and big enough to have an impact on a significant number of non-gay people. It probably also needs to be a long-term action, not just a day, so that people really feel the impact, thus gay people really have to be committed to it and willing to make the necessary sacrifices, like risking their jobs. In order for that to happen, gay people need to believe that they've got something better than a snowball's chance in hell at success. Finally, the Gestalt of the nation has to be right. Today was not the day.

To answer jason's questions, I didn't know about the strike until I got home tonight, by which time it was too late. If I had known, I would not have participated. I'm not sure what the repercussions would have if I called in "gay," but as a general rule, time off needs to be approved well in advance. If I had requested time off in advance and explained why I was taking time off, my employers wouldn't have cared one way or another, making the strike somewhat pointless. It probably would have been pointless either way. Even if every gay person at my company went on strike, there are so few of us our absence would hardly be noticed.

If (...and I don't agree with the concept of strikes...) one were to reactively strike against a company in order to illustrate the importance of gay rights, couldn't you also make an arguement that one should proactively support companies that support gay rights? At the place where I work, we have an employee handbook based on a manual written by a gay guy over 15 years ago...so it remains inherently gay-friendly (it even defines same sex partners as spouses for sick leave). What would be the point of punishing such a company when they have been playing by the correct rules for over a decade?

*Methinks this is just an excuse to get a day off for Christmas shopping

Because it forces even companies who feel they have the gay thing worked out to realize that they must not only accept gays within their institution but work for the betterment of gay rights in public and private life. It reinforces the idea that we all suffer when some of us suffer. If the boycott were effective and every single LGBT person in the country, in and out, didn't go to work today, the country would be crippled and it would force foes and supporters alike to realize that we must work harder to achieve equality for all American citizens.

The point of boycott is to cut into the lives of everyone. After all, gays will be just as inconvenienced as everyone else. I daresay true supporters of gay rights will understand why it is taking place and hope that the effects of the boycott illustrate just how valuable LGBT people are to the prosperity of the entire nation.

I agree about the Xmas shopping. Like I said, poorly disorganized. Once upon a time boycotting was a legit way to make your voice heard but leave it to American gay men to turn it into a freakshow/excuse for missing work, probably to hit up the bathhouses.

I believe that's overly cynical and again, quite disparaging and discouraging. If gay men go to the bathhouse then how is that inappropriate? Bathhouses are where gay men go to meet other gay men. They are part of gay culture.

Many gay people don't care about unity, they just wanna dance around in booty shorts and fuck.

Yup, sexual orientation is NOT protected in every state. Subway recently fired an employee for doing gay porn as a side-job.

There is no principle to Pride parades and they've never been planned with gay rights in mind. They're defiant, brazen, and mostly just a way to trade phone numbers and STDs.

rec3000 ... of course you won't attack Marley for those comments.
