I'm going to Japan next month, and am planning on going to an onsen (Japanese thermal bath house). I have heard that your supposed to pull your foreskin back before entering. Can anybody confirm if this is true or not?

Not true at all! The big rule is to shower and be very clean prior to entering the baths!

Agreed. No rule about pulling back foreskin before entering the onsen.

I think what you heard might be that when you shower before you enter the bath, you may wish to pull back your foreskin and clean that at well.

Oh well I always pull back in the shower public and private, and to pee. Not that it's a big deal really, mine sometimes rolls back on it's own, but usually only when I'm when I'm wearing tight support underwear at the gym.

Oh, you shouldn't have a problem then. Just do what you normally do when you soap up and rinse before you enter the soaking pool.

has to be absolute BS OP
weak attempt at introducing FCKD Western BS thoughts n practices into the Asian cultures

if it turns out to be a truth, i would be most surprised, and readily apologize to whomever ..

re-thinking, it may well be a truth and custom, as the Japanese are a super clean person huh
be interested to hear if you find out the truth re your query, Thanks ..
wont delete nor apologize for above tirade, just yet ha

There's nothing I like more than seeing stereotypes get smashed. Don't worry about the rant, I tend to be quick out the gate myself. My sister is getting married to a Japanese man, so I want to do my best to not cause offense to his family/not make a tit of myself.

It depends on what you mean by "supposed to." If you mean "preferred that," then the answer would be a resounding yes. If you mean "required to," then the answer would be no.

The following is my translation of a Q&A thread that has appeared on Yahoo! Japan's "chiebukuro" ("Bag of Wisdom"; the original is here):

Question: "When you have gone to a hot spring (onsen in Japanese), do you hide your penis? As for myself, I have a foreskin that is not retracted when my penis is flaccid (i.e. my foreskin covers my glans; kawakaburi in Japanese), so I am embarrassed, and I hide it, but..."
(Question posted by starrytext-san on 2008/7/29)

Best Answer: "I used to hide mine in my younger days. I have a foreskin that covers my glans when my penis is flaccid but retracts naturally when my penis becomes erect (kasei in Japanese), so even though I would peel my glans bare, my foreskin would try to come back down over it, and that embarrassed me.

Lately, I hardly ever hide my penis. When it seems like my foreskin is about to come down over my glans, I fix it nonchalantly (LOL). You need to be especially careful when you get up and out of the bathtub/pool. My penis becomes even more soft and droopy in the warm water, and the foreskin distends to cover the glans completely, so I always make sure to peel my glans bare and then get out. However, there are quite a few people who (are so bold as to) fully expose themselves even when they have the glans covered by the foreskin (houkei in Japanese). We're all men, so once you've got used to it, you won't be so troubled about it anymore."

How is any of this even an issue? If guys in Japan don't like foreskin, then why don't they just get circumcised?

First, you have made an unjustified assumption that "guys in Japan don't like foreskin." There are plenty of people who are indifferent to foreskin, and there are plenty of people who like foreskin (or even a particular type of foreskin) as a sort of fetish. However, it is preferred that one's glans be bare when one is nude in a public setting.

Second, the idea of circumcision is controversial in Japan for several reasons:

1) there is no tradition of circumcision in Japan (i.e. it is foreign -- eww!)
2) the idea of surgery on one's penis may seem a bit grotesque or frightening; a lot of men wonder, "How much/for how long will it hurt?," "How will it look after the cut has healed? What will the scar be like?," "What are the odds of complications occurring during or after the operation?," "Will there be any loss or change of sensation?"
3) it is traditionally not acceptable to permanently alter or "damage" the body that one has been given by one's parents (i.e. circumcision may be seen as an act of disobedience, rebellion, lack of respect for one's parents and family, etc.)
4) You can pull back a foreskin to temporarily imitate a circumcised or naturally "peeled" (zurumuke) penis, but you cannot do the reverse to temporarily imitate an intact penis. As I have mentioned above, there are people who have a fetish or obsession with various kinds of penes and foreskins, and undergoing a circumcision would permanently remove oneself from the pool of potential partners for anyone of that persuasion.

I'm sure there are plenty of other reasons that I have not enumerated above. Anyway, suffice it to say that the problem is not so simple as you seem to have imagined it to be.

I don't know validity of it but I have heard of that practice in Japan. Not a high rate of circumcision but a social pressure I guess to retract the foreskin around puberty. I don't think there would be any expectation of you as a foreigner for any cultural practice other than what the rest of said that you wash well before.
