I have a question before I start this series of books. How long of a time period do all of these books span? Do they follow the same characters from book 1 on, or are there new characters farther along the time line in each book? Sorry if the question seems ignorant, but I really have only watched the HBO series and don't know how it goes from there.

Thanks

Only 3/4's through book 4, but I am guessing by the end of book 5 the series will have covered 5-10 years? It's hard to focus on time since it only comes up briefly.

Characters remain fairly consistent, though some get axed, while others are dropped out of the lime-light so new ones can be fleshed out. Every book introduces a few new members to the plot, or details those formerly mentioned in brief.

I've heard that about book 4. I've also heard book 5 makes up for it. I'm a third of the way through book 3 now and kind of don't want it to end (dreading having to go through book 4).

I admit the series now has me intrigued, Rawdog, for reasons known!:tongue:

Currently reading ADWD and following the casting for series 2. Looking good so far. Can't wait to see Carice van Houten as Melisandre! There's a lot more in the second book that would be expensive to film/involve CGI. Can't wait to see how they bring the House of the Undying to the screen.

Ooo she's a good choice for the part. Hopefully they opt for red contacts too! I was a bit let down by the show's depiction of Tyrion after reading the books; the whole mismatched eyes thing should have been included.

Do you know who is to play Stannis?

Vargo Hoat is another character I can't wait to see. Heeh
"King Sthhhhlaya!"

Stephen Dillane is playing Stannis, haven't seen much of him but I trust the casting team.
Tyrion's appearance is toned down a bit, I wonder if his appearance on the show will change like it does in the books..
Interested to see how Jaqen H'ghar is depicted on screen. Quite a few roles aren't cast yet: The Boltons, most of the Ironmen. I'd like to see Peter Capaldi as Roose Bolton and Tom Hardy as Ramsay. Have you seen the girl cast as Brienne?

I did not read them in order. I enjoyed each one as a stand-alone, simply because they are so grippingly written that I didn't mind not knowing the connection. But I did go back and read them in the right order later, because they are that good.

Sometimes I would not recognize a character from one volume as being the same one I was reading in the next until I had read the books again in the right order; even though the episodes are related, they often didn't seem to be. Although I think it is fair to say that they all take place in the same era there is a lot of timeline skipping back and forth into the past and so many different geographical stages of action too. The sheer scope of the world the author created sweeps you along.

Start with whichever book you can get hold of first. I have read them all more than once, and like the New Yorker article said, 'give us the next book, George!'

Terry Pratchett is the only other author I know of who makes fantasy worlds I want to read every single volume of without choosing a favorite.

You've come for the incest and "swordplay"?

Or is it for the even more obvious... Dragons?

I haven't had any exposure to the "Thrones" novels and the first I had heard of them was when RawDog decided that my new pet name was Khaleesi.

*grins*
I now have to go read them so I can find out if I should be offended  or not.

Book 2 and 3 are just a blur to me. They fit together so well... the dialogue was blissful, characters evolved in delicious ways, epic events unfolded... You'll enjoy the rest of 3!

I slowed waay down going through book 3 so I could relish it more. Book 2 was just so addicting.

Don't believe it. I'm reading 4 now and it's just as amazing as the previous 3, IMO. I cannot see why anyone would say 4 isn't as good.

I'll go with that. That's a much better outlook. I will let you know if you're right.

I admit the series now has me intrigued, Rawdog, for reasons known!:tongue:

I thought calling you the nickname Khaleesi would intrigue you. Mission accomplished!

Now that book 5 was recently published, I wonder when 6 and 7 are coming out.
