Teachers union leader blasted for pushing to keep schools closed as she vacations in Puerto Rico | Daily Mail Online
The unsmiling, judgmental talking heads at Fox News were all over Chicago School Board member Sarah Chambers for vacationing in the tranquil, azure blue waters of the Caribbean while everyone else in her school district were busy dodging gang violence and digging out of snow drifts. The Daily Mail from the UK described it as a tropical getaway. But folks, there are tropical getaways and there are tropical getaways. Hers ranks somewhere at the lowest echelon of budget vacations.
I've been studying her two vacation photos in detail. In one pic from her sarah4justice Instagram account she is smiling broadly, clad in a bikini, with a usual assortment of queen palm trees in the background designed to evoke envy and jealousy from anyone who's felt imprisoned in their homes these past COVID months. But it is of little use when attempting to establish location or the name of the resort she was luxuriating at. The second photo is much more revealing. Beyond Sarah's feet looks to be a tiny pool area, typical of a dated 1950s hotel in the Old San Juan area of town.
Having spent a night or two in delightful, historic mid-century Caribbean hotels, I can attest some of those tropical "luxury-budget" resorts are not for the faint-of-heart. Be prepared for water temperature in the shower which can change from ice cold to scalding hot the instant another guest flushes a toilet. Window air conditioners that clatter and howl like an old Ford Pinto four-cylinder engine with a slipping alternator-fan belt. Wherever the hell in Puerto Rico that Sarah Chambers booked, rest assured it wasn't a Ritz-Carlton or Four Seasons. So I for one am giving the girl a break on her Christmas/New Years getaway.
Which raises the question why Fox News spent the better part of a fifteen minute segment leading viewers to believe the vacationing school board member was staying at one of these: The 10 BEST Luxury Hotels in the Caribbean Worth the Splurge | Jetsetter
