I have no fear or animosity toward anyone who follow Islam. As a matter of fact I have a very close Muslim friend who for the record is also opposed to a Mosque being built in the shadow of ground zero out of principle but also the simple fact that if it is built it is going to forever be fraught with problems of violence and ill will.

I agree, this could easily become America's Dome of the Rock/Al Aqsa Mosque. Even though it was an extreme sect of Islam that destroyed the towers, it would be in bad taste for a mosque to be built on those grounds. There are enough idiots and bigots in our country that blame all of Islam for the attacks. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should.

I'm personally not to keen on any religious institutions being built anywhere, but for the sake of the question posed by the op...No, I have no problem with a mosque at ground zero. I do, however, recognize the security situation that would present. The question is however, is it better to build and expose those issues head on and deal with the consequences as those issues are hopefully dispelled and evolve to new understandings, or to not build and avoid facing those same prevalent issues, which will remain regardless and continue to fester.

Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should.

Very true

I always love the people who don't live in NY or were here that day that keep saying this. Would you like to explain to me what happened?

Hi Nudeyorker. I'm from New York and I happen to not believe the official story at all. I'm not looking to argue or debate it here, it's just my opinion. The one question I have about your post though is..how does not being from NY or not been there that day preclude one from that same opinion?

If I was in charge of searching for a location for a new mosque, I definitely wouldn't pick that location- only because wet blankets would whine and complain, and the place would get vandalized pretty frequently- but that's not a reason the authorities can use to say no. Say no on traffic grounds- maybe energy usage, etc, but because some bigots have their panties in a bunch? Look, in all seriousness, i can see WHY people might be upset- but it seems rooted in an irrational deep-set fear of Islam.

Why does location matter? The official facts are well-known. You needn't have been a resident of New York to be knowlegdable (sp?) about 9/11.

On the NBC News that is airing now, if anyone wants to verify my claim can trot over to NBC.com and read the whole story for yourself.
The New York authorities have voted to allow a Muslim Mosque to be built at Ground Zero!

From a quick google search, the mosque is planned for NEAR ground zero- not ON ground zero. Someone correct me if I'm wrong....

You've got some reading to do arkfarmbear as TomCat84 is correct.
Yet making inaccurate, sensationalized OPs is fun, eh?

"The mosque and the related community center are a project of several groups, including the American Society for Muslim Advancement and the Cordoba Initiative, which promotes cross-cultural understanding between Islam and the West. "

I am sure, even with my old, decrepit ears, that I heard it on NBC with Brian Williams this evening.
Take up your nitpicking with NBC, not me.

I am rather old, poorly educated, with failing eyesight. Sorry, I can't read as much as you suggest.
As I said to TomCat, take it up with NBC, not me.
I wasn't aware that throwing out subjects that reflect current politics was improper.

Geez, forgive me!

On which principle is your friend opposing it being built?

Maybe when you hear something on the tube, you should take a minute or two and follow up on the facts. Some news stations are so biased and most listeners hear with a bias.

I only quote the op's post for illustration. I hear the same kind of statement often.... "It's not my fault. I heard it <insert source here>"
