Background: On February 12, openly gay junior high student Larry King (no relation to the CNN show host) was murdered in a classroom, shot twice in the head by a fellow student as other students watched.

The cover of issue 1005 of The Advocate features a dithered black-and-white photo of Larry King with the headline "Who's to blame?" The cover story begins on page 28 of that issue with the lead quote, "15-year-old Lawrence King was encouraged to be himself. Did that lesson help send him to his grave?"

In a brazenly sensationalist attempt to sell magazines, The Advocate sends a chilling and offensive message one might hear from Fred Phelps: Stay closeted or die!

There's one person to blame for Larry King's murder: Brandon McInerney, the classmate who shot him. To even whisper the idea that encouraging someone to come out is a factor in murder is absurd; it would be like blaming 9/11 on travel agents who "encouraged" people to fly that day, or Hurricane Katrina on the architects who designed lovely homes in New Orleans that "encouraged" people to move there.

Anne Stockwell, editor in chief of The Advocate, owes the magazine's readership an apology and a resignation for having not only green-lighted the story, but featuring it on this issue's cover.

That's just vile.

Of course, given the recorded rant we heard from OK legislator Kern, I would imagine that nuggets of such bigotry continue to thrive here in the land of the free, nutured by the compost of general indifference.

The shooting itself took place on February 12. This was, in terms of school shootings, a unusually horrible week: shootings took place on four different campuses that week, so this story got overshadowed in the mainstream media.
  • February 8, Baton Rouge, LA: 3 dead, including the shooter
  • February 11, Memphis, TN: 1 wounded
  • February 12, Oxnard, CA: 1 dead (this is the story The Advocate reported)
  • February 14, DeKalb, IL: 6 dead, including the shooter

Terrible.

But, honestly...really...isn't The Advocate just a little anachronistic? It's so rainbow flag/commitment-ceremony 90s.

Screw Oklahoma Republican Representative Sally Kern! She's worse that the Kansas homophobic guy that calls himself a minister. Recently 1,000 supporters cheered her stand against gays. Are we in for another Anita Bryant? :frown1:

Every baby step on the road to equality is a landmine of potential "backlash".

I remember the Anita Bryant bullshit back in the late 70s. Didn't her husband wind up being a closet case?

Phyllis Schlafly's son came out, she grunted and carries on like nothing's happened.

Alan Keyes has disinherited his own daughter.

And then there's Mary Cheney...

Sally Kern is worse than Anita Bryant because Bryant never held elective office. Moreover, according to wikipedia, Bryant has backpedaled from her anti-gay stance.

She was a pretty woman and the pie-in-the-face was priceless!
