I've always known myself to be 5' 8-1/2" (174cm) tall. I can distinctly recall my physician back when I was in my 20's checking my height and reading it off to me.

Well, today I am only 5' 7" (170cm)!! Aargh!

So, I did some research and found this: Yep, you're shrinking as you get older. Here's why

On average, we shrink about a quarter to a third of an inch per decade for every decade after 40. All told, men will get about 1.2 to 1.5 inches shorter, and women will lose up to 2 inches, by age 70

Sure enough, at age 70, it seems that I have lost 1.5" since my 20's. It's odd, because I have been feeling shorter for some time, but I assumed that it was because I have changed the type of shoes that I typically wear.

I find this knowledge really upsetting...

I recently was told I was 5'11" and no longer 6' --- I'm in complete denial

I feel for you.

But at 5' 11", you still qualify as "tall".

I've gone from borderline average to downright short!

I hate it, I hate it, I hate it! I have no idea how I am going to deal with this.

Well....YEAH!
One of the great benefits of weight lifting is that it can stop osteopenia, the loss of bone density that happens with age.
And one of the benefits of yoga (probably also Pilates) is that by strengthening the core and back muscles, the spine stays long and supple without deterioration of the discs between the vertebrae.

I'm almost 70, and still 6'-2" at my last physical in February.

I'm going to keep doing yoga then....

Hey there. I was 6' for as long as I could remember, but a recent physical exam showed me at 5'11. I turned 50 in 2021, and I'm wondering how much more I will shrink? I guess the only benefit to shrinking, is my cock will look even bigger! lol

I hear you. My cock still gets and stays hard as a rock, thank God! However, I think my balls are getting bigger, not sagging bigger, but bigger, bigger! lol

I'm curious to know if anyone else has experienced any significant shrinking as they've gotten older. I know an inch or two is common, but has anyone experienced anything that would be considered significant? For example, have people started to notice and comment on it?

My 96 year-old mother has lost a great deal of height. I would estimate at least six inches.

Wow, 6 inches is pretty significant! Do you worry that you'll take after her? What about your father, was he tall?

Neither of my parents were tall. And, I, at 5' 8-1/2" was the second tallest of all my brothers, the shortest being about 5' 6".

My mother, like so many Italian women, has lost a lot of height in her later years. My father passed more than 20 years ago - I would guess that he was about 5' 7" at his best and may have lost a bit as he aged.

Both my parents were the children of Italian immigrants. All four of my grandparents were quite short. My maternal grandfather was 5' 2", according to his application for US citizenship. My paternal grandfather was 5' 6" according to his WWII draft registration card.

My mother is Italian, and a lot of relatives on her side of the family were and are on the shorter side. You said you were feeling shorter, has anyone commented on your height?

It's unlikely anyone would notice. I left my hometown to move 1,300 miles away when I was 22, then left that area to move another 1,300 miles about 21 years later. And, in my current location, I worked at one company for 15 years and now another for 10 years.

So, all in all, I don't really have any long-term friends (yeah, that's a whole 'nother story...) who might notice any changes.
