Hey guys, so I've been working on my abs for 2 years now, I do an intense 30 min abdominal session 3x a week, I weight train, and run marathons. My body fat is around 6% but I still can't get my abs to show more than they do in the pix . Anyone have any advice?

You are very lean and in some of the photos you show a bit of abs and nicely defined cum gutters.
This is what I do.
I have been going to the gym everyday for over three months now and am starting to see results. Lost 20lbs of fat and feel great. I am 6 feet tall and 180lbs.

I do 100 weight assisted sit ups and 60 weight assisted side bends every day. My photos are over 90 days old so I will need to post some new ones.
My advice would be going to the gym and make a routine of weights. You are young and can alter your body in no time.
Still I would jump your bones and think that you have a really nicely shaped dick!

Quit doing "abdominal sessions". Abs are much more than the "6 pack" in the front. Crunches are the worst ab exercises you can do.
Integrate "core conditioning" into your exercise regimen. In core conditioning you exercise your abs isometrically and in concert with other muscle groups which is how they operate in reality. With core conditioning you will see big gains in strength and overall fitness.
Men's Health is a good source of information.

My trainer put me on this routine and I do yoga for core training.

Thanks guys. Been thinking bout yoga.
Alex that's hot!
Humdinger, a lot of these things focus on weight loss, which isn't really an option for me.

I run about two miles every day and do everything else in moderation. Whomever it was that said to focus on "core exercises" had it bang on- I've never focused on my abs specifically but rather just on remaining healthy and getting a decent work out. For me running as has worked out but I know that's not everybody's thing.

Thanks zombie, but that's what I've been pointing out, that I do all these things, including running (i do 3 mile runs during the week and 10+ mile marathon runs on Sundays), but nothing seems to work

It depends of person. If you are only 6% bodyfat, this is like nothing. You are skin, bones and muscles. So the problem is not in lack of cardio workout, but in the supplementation. Abs is the strange part of a body, because you get those in the kitchen, not in the gym...

Overdoing cardio, especially distance running, will prevent muscle definition. It develops the wrong muscle fibers for the bulk that provides definition. That's why marathon runners are emaciated looking stringbeans.
For good muscle definition, which is what you seem to be saying you want, you need a balance of cardio and heavy resistance training. You appear to be unbalanced with too much cardio and not enough resistance work. In other words, you have a high proportion of slow twitch muscle fibers but you're lacking in fast twitch fibers.

Ditto!! I also agree that you're not at 6%. If you go to a gym, a trained staff member can often give you a body fat check (using calipers, not the electric device, which is often not accurate). My guess is that if you want your abs to show, you just need to cut down on your body fat % even more. I also recommend ab exercises that use weight (not crunches). Ab exercises are VERY easy to do incorrectly and thus ineffectively. It might be worth doing a few sessions with a trainer who is an expert on abs to make sure you're doing things right. If you've been doing them for two years and are not seeing results, then yes, as you suspect, you're not doing something right. Good for you for stepping back and realizing this and being ready to figure out what to do! I'd say with the right eating and routine, you should have a nice six-pack in three months or less (based on my own experience and similar body type as you). Good luck!

Really? That's awfully harsh (speaking on behalf of marathon runners everywhere.)

But he's not wrong about the rest of it. I think, in your case, just the cardio isn't going to do it.

I used to be just like you. There was a point when I did between 100-200 sit ups a day for 6 months and saw absolutely no definition; just a flat stomach. So I said to hell with that and started working out my chest. I did between 100-150 push ups per day for the first 3 months, then started doing 150 push ups every other day. My pectoral muscles started to grow immediately and the more I did push ups, the more definition I started seeing in my abs. Then I hit the gym, started doing weights, bench presses, intense cardio...and everything started to fall into place. Push ups were successful in helping me get abs...I no longer do abdominal exercises other than the occasional crunches.

I'm inclined to think some body types just don't lend themselves to having 6 pack abs. I work out about 5 days a week and have fairly good definition. Though I do have a flat stomach, I don't have rippling abs. I never have regardless of the ab work I might be doing. Now I tend not to do a lot of ab exercises and don't really care to spend the next 20 years continuing to try for a 6 pack. As long as my stomach stays relatively flat, I'm happy.

From your pics, you're slim, but I think someperson is right.

Gottal love all the differeing opinions!
Personally, I agree with this completely. Abs are the only muscles that are not going to show unless you're somewhere under 8% body fat, and achieving that is going to happen much more in the kitchen than in the gym. My personal experience of getting a six-pack was that it was 75% eating and 25% ab/core exercises.
