This is a neat little game I play with a few friends from around the globe. We all pick our contenders for the Oscars before the finalists are announced and then refine our picks once the announcement has been made. Let's see your picks for the main categories. Picks should be based on who you think will win. If it's really tough to pick just one, give an either/or!

Without further a-do, here be mine:

Best Picture
Avatar

Best Director
James Cameron - Avatar
OR
Kathryn Bigelow - The Hurt Locker

Best Actor
Jeff Bridges - A Crazy Heart

Best Actress
Sandra Bullock - The Blind Side

Best Supporting Actor
Christopher Waltz - Inglourious Basterds

Best Supporting Actress
Mo'nique - Precious

Best Animated Feature
Up

EDIT - And as always, a nod but unlikely a win for Meryl Streep.

Most of that does seem set in stone. Though I do hope that the Academy nominates Ponyo by Hayao Miyazaki in the animated realm. IMO it was by far the best animated movie of the year.

And this will confirm how gay I am:

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MONIQUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MONIQUE! MONIQUE! MONIQUE!

Cool predictions, while I really enjoyed Avatar, I think Hurt Locker might come from behind and win. It's funny because Cameron and Bigelow used to be married a few years back, but they kept a working relationship.

Avatar is going to wrap up most of the technical awards. Perhaps 7-8 of them. And when a film wins that many technical awards, is a cultural phenomenon, and well received, (see Titanic) it is bound to win Best Picture. Also, there isn't a major challenger this year, apart from The Hurt Locker, which was released way back in the first quarter and is more of a small indie pic.

So, yeah, Avatar ending up with a good 8-10 oscars, probably ending up with $2.5 billion worldwide.

Here are my thoughts...

Best Picture The Hurt Locker

Best Director Kathryn Bigelow The Hurt Locker

Best Actor Jeff Bridges Crazyheart

Best Actress Carey Mulligan An Education

Best Supporting Actor Stanly Tucci The Lovely Bones

Best Supporting Actress Juliane Moore A Single Man

Best Animated Feature Up

Best Foreign Film Broken Embraces

We shall see but I think Avatar is going to walk away with the technical awards.

Is it just me or did all this buzz and accolades for Bullock in The Blind Side seem to come out of nowhere? That would be a win that i never anticipated. I do like her as an actress though.

Well Avatar will be heavily rewarded for blitzing the box office. Left me cold, just like Titanic did.

Other than that, dunno. Haven't seen enough films in past year.

I don't think the Oscars has same impact as it once did tbh. Can never even remember who won. Doesn't seem to do much for actors careers either besides credibility. Then again, thats probably what they crave.

OK the announcements have been made I'm sticking with my predictions except I'll go for Penelope Cruz just because I really like her!

I like her too, but i would've been much more satisfied if Marion Cotillard got her spot for NINE instead. She was amazing. But they campaigned for her to be in Best Actress in that already tight race.

Cruz did great in NINE but she doesn't have a chance in hell of winning against Mo'Nique, plus, the fact that she won the same award so recently.

I Like District 9 too.
Avatar will win 7 (technical) oscars, maybe 9 if It's also wins "Best Picture" & "Best Director"
It made boxoffice history (not if we adjust the ticketprize), that should help!
