This was debated by a couple of mates and myself after reviewing the threads that deal with male body image and penis shame that have been linked to it, with some guys saying that perhaps having action figures made without that lump of plastic in the front, ala Ken Dolls, they should be able to perchase a variant that has all the 'correct' bits in place. That way, kids can see that men do indeed have dicks and that they are natural and nothing to be ashamed about. Barbie after all does have her boobs showing for all to see and so breasts are pretty much all there to see on all female dolls and action figures, yet the male parts are either covered up or made non existent.
Thoughts ? Would having these type of male figurines available help male body issues or in fact hinder it ?

Of course we should have anatomically correct dolls. It's absurd to not have them when a doll is detailed enough in other respects.

Make no mistake though, neither Barbie nor Ken are truly proportionate anatomically. If we were to see a real, living Barbie or Ken on the street we'd think them freaks of nature with exceptionally long legs and arms, relatively short torsos, and enormous heads.

Body shame has been around for aeons. It's propagated by religions, which broadcast that sex, the urges of the body, procreation and the surrounding pleasure are somewhat and somehow shameful and cannot be trusted.

    I know that's bull pucky.

Barbie Dolls were based on a German toy, which was sold in sex stores.

Barbie does not have nipples, that scares me!But maybe that fits with Ken not having a dick.

I think it's ridiculous to have a doll that is anatomically correct.

Children are buying dolls to play with them, not to stare at their cock n' 'ginas.

    Coming from you, I'm surprised.

What reason isn't there? No one says they have to stare at the genitals. Do you think that's what a child would do?

No, the children would be more likely to chew the penis off. (Or poke their eye out with it)

Toys get gnawed on quite frequently. By the time the kid is old enough to appreciate which parts are which how many parts will be left?

I had Action Man. But never felt the need to undress him! lol
I've never even wondered for a second why it is that dolls don't have balls so I doubt a child would care.

There are other more probable causes for unhealthy body image and hence more logical ways of addressing them.

    I live to be mysterious.

I'll try to think of a way to explain myself.

When I think about action figures etc.... I think about what we did with them as a kid. We played with them, dressed them in their 'gear', and imagined various scenarios in which they could save the day. ( I didn't really play with barbies as a kid. If I did, they tended to be kind butch and they usually saved the world as well:rolleyes:)

I can honestly remember seeing my G.I.Joe doll and noticing he didn't have a penis. I didn't really care. I was too busy saving the world, to worry about how G.I.Joe was gonna fuck the damsel in distress.

Besides, I think alot of parents told their children that Barbie/Ken was just wearing underwear, when I was a kid.

Is that wrong? I dont' think so. I asked about my penis when I was about 8 and that's when I learned about sexual things etc.

I could be way off... Who knows?

Having dolls that are anatomically correct wouldn't help kids to think the body isn't shameful, they learn that from their parents.

Have you seen the anatomically correct dolls out there? They're almost always hung in true LPSG style.. lol

I actually had a baby doll that had a tiny willy which peed if I filled it with water & squeezed. I have no idea now where my parents got it, but since I wasn't any more developed than the doll was, I doubt it created any self-image issues.

I can hardly call a Barbie "anatomically correct", though. No nipples, no sag, no vagina -- barely even any butt cheeks, either. Outlandishly proportioned, yeah, but not accurate.

As it is now, if an action figure has a package, it's always taken as a joke. See Drawn Together's Captain Hero on Comedy Central or the SNL clips, The Ambiguously Gay Duo.

I agree with you...action figrues should be produced anatomically correct.
The normal human body of both males and females...is a beautiful part of life as we know.
Americans seem to have more hang-ups & issues like the human body is tabu or that of shame....they (we) need to get over it!

You can get into trouble for making dolls anatomically correct:

Billy"The Gay UPS"Doll Taken Off Shelves

Alas, I've heard rumor the Billy, Carlos, Tyson, and Tom (Rebel, authorized by the Tom of GFinland Foundation) dolls are no longer made. Of course, they were made for children over 18,and might give actual children an inferiority complex...

Then again, even without anatomical features, you can get pretty nasty with action figures:

Actually, I think that action figures have no need to be anatomically correct. What purpose would it serve, anyway?

Here's one of the ones I've seen:
Male Anatomically correct action figure | bachelorette party gifts

The early GI Joes were basically more macho Ken dolls with guns & Jeeps, but the later ones, with their smaller size and multiple articulation joints, had no room at all for private parts even if they wanted them.

Despite this, we had no problems putting them into compromising positions. :biggrin1:

I definitely would have played with dolls if Billy had been around. But seriously, I do think it would set kids of both sexes up for major disappointment in the future. Mom didnt buy me a Barbie but I definitely felt when I looked at Barbie's chest and at my own that someone had been sorely cheated and it wasnt Barbie. Now, as for the Billy doll I need to find one of each to put in my doll collection.

Oh please, y'all know the dick on an anatomically correct action figure or Ken wouldn't last 48 hours before a little girl broke it off. :biggrin1: She'd be trying to use it as a hammer or putting it somewhere it didn't belong by using it as an allen wrench. Plus Malibu Ken has a tan, he also comes in a black iand hispanic version. So you know those penises are gonna come off because the girls will want to mix and match them.:rolleyes::biggrin1:
