Is this really normal?

The Bush administration insists US Army Sgt Charles Jenkins is to face court martial for deserting forty years ago in Korea. We have an Air National Guard deserter as pRESIDENT who faces no court martial.

The Bush administration insists on charging Bobby Fisher with federal crimes for breaking sanctions by playing a chess game in Yugoslavia. We have a vice pRESIDENT who broke sanctions against Iran, Libya, and Iraq by approving hundreds of millions of dollars worth of oil contracts and faces no federal charges.

Goose. Gander. Yada yada. Just venting. :)

In all fairness, failing to show up for Guard duty is a far, FAR lesser offense than defecting to the enemy in a combat zone. I mean, it's not even close. Assuming that he did go over voluntarily -- and wasn't kidnapped and brainwashed, like the North Koreans have been known to do -- then from a legal point of view, it would be very reasonable to charge him with treason.

My gut feeling though is that the US wanted to extradite him to get information about North Korea, not to put him in prison. By all accounts, Jenkins is in poor health, and putting him away in his weaker years would not make up for 50 years of anti-American propaganda anyway. He's a pretty tragic figure no matter how you look at it.

Yeah, but 40 years ago when we have a vice president who traded with our enemies less than 10 years ago.

It's amazing. Big Dick Cheney implies a terrorist attack is more likely if Kerry is elected.

Excuse me? On who's watch did a catastrophic terrorist attack actually occur?

Actualy, when I heard Cheney imply that, I thought "How does he know there will be a terrorist attack?" Then I realized he has Osama's cell number on speed dial.
