After I visited an adult sex toy shop today, I thought that it would be helpful for these kinds of stores to hire more men. I think I would have bought more stuff today if the person in the store would have been male. I found it very uncomfortable to speak to the woman about the things I was looking at. I did have her open a penis extension box so that I could see the color of the penis. She tossed the floppy thing on the counter, and I just kind of got speechless. I wanted to look at a new fleshlight, but felt like a heel if I asked her to let me look at the pussy lips of the toy. Just want to know what I will be putting myself in. I find the lips to be especially exciting. Don't feel I could say that to her. So I didn't have her open the box. If it had been a guy, I would have said lots of things and probably bought a whole lot more. Ended up not buying anything. Any of you have similar experiences?

Interesting thought. I do know that when I’m buying clothing for myself, I would prefer a male over a female. And Mrs. Squirrel prefers buying her clothes from a female. I would thing the same would hold true for intimate items.

This used to be me.....but I've gotten over that. Hey, if they are not embarrassed or uncomfortable, than neither am I. This includes both men and women.......They have to know why we are there looking at these toys---because we like them and enjoy using them for sexual pleasure....or we are very interested in checking new toys out....no big deal really!! Many times the sales persons can be very helpful, telling you which toys they might have used themselves...or sharing feedback on products used by other customers. All the times I've interacted with them, they have been professional and helpful. And like you, I've asked them to unpack dildos and anal toys....or asked questions about best lube to use with specific toys. Once i got over my hesitation and anxiety about being there buying sex toys in front of strangers, things became pretty simple and straight forward. Good luck my friend!!

I used to work in an Adult Book Store and really enjoyed it for the time. We hired women to work but they didn't last very long after their hiring. Many complained incessantly about inappropriate advances or comments and would soon quit. Our particular store was 24 hours and our boss felt some concern for females working the night shifts so if a female was working there had to be a male employee working along side the female employee. Males were allowed to work alone during any shift so I was always working the graveyard shift alone and didn't have any issues. We sold toys and dvds so we catered to a wide demographic of people. The dvds were more popular among our male demographic while our toys were more popular among our females. The reason the toys were more popular was because most of the toys catered to females but we did have quite a bit of toys that catered to males. Men just weren't as into toys as females were. Once we figured out the times that were best suited for our female employees to work it was easily worked out where female employees were only scheduled in the day when we noticed women were more likely to purchase. Occassionally we'd get females come in at night but the difference is she would either be with other females or with a male companion. Something I noticed with male and female customers is females were ore likely to ask you questions about the toys they were interested in purchasing whereas men were hesitant to engage the employees and almost seemed embarrassed about purchasing a toy. I always made my customers feel welcome to ask me anything they wanted by engaging them as soon as they entered the store. I would allow them plenty of time to browse and if I saw them lingering I'd casually ask them if they were finding everything okay and if they had any questions. When you've worked in an adult book store for a while you are not freaked out or weirded out by too much.

I would imagine that unless it's their first day, they've probably heard it all before and would be unlikely to be shocked by anything you say. In fact they're probably tired of dealing with people who can't admit to what they want. As long as you're being respectful and non-creepy, they'd probably appreciate the honesty and matter-of-factness.

It's a fair point.

Last time I went in a shop like that, I asked the shop assistant if they sell extra large condoms. To my surprise they DIDNT.

It did cross my mind afterwards that I had basically walked into a shop and declared to everyone 'hi guys, I've got a massive cock!!'.

The first time I attended International Mr. Leather (IML) I was surprised to see women staffing the booths at the trade show, and at first I felt a bit awkward, but then I realized just as others mentioned, they've seen and heard it all (well, almost all) and why not engage them in conversation? That said, a few years later I entered one of the adult stores here in town to look at pumping equipment and when I walked in the door, a woman was the only employee there, and I just didn't feel comfortable talking to her about it, so I went to a different shop. Obviously I still need to work through this issue.

Well yes, there will always be situations where a man would be more comfortable talking to a man, and a woman to a woman. And that's not sexism, just propriety. But if someone's entire job is to sell sex toys, you've got to assume they've worked through those issues, and you can address them as adults.

I went into an adult store for lube. Silly young people working. I left. I thought they must lose business. If I was to deal with an employee I’d prefer a man.

My brother owns a good sized store, manager is male, employees are a mix. There doesn't seem to be any indication of one having better sales or customer satisfaction. He had one lesbian who worked a short time, but she didn't seem to get along with anyone, I am sure just her personality, not a judgement of that group of people

You communicate excellently. I just read your entire post and was interested in what you had to say. I don’t know what you do for work but I hope you get to talk. Best of luck to you.
