This just blows everything away. Homo erectus, believed by paleontologists to be the first species of human to leave Africa, may not have evolved in Africa at all. The place they may have evolved, or even co-evolved, is Europe! Some paleontologists have unearthed not one, but five Homo erectus skeletons which show a link between Homo erectus and Homo habilis, a species only previously found in Africa. It may even be possible that Homo habilis left Africa, went to Europe, then migrated back to Africa! This is pretty spectacular because, like Homo floriensis, it represents a significant find in human evolution outside of Africa; itself a rare thing. It also demonstrates that humans got around long before most paleontologists thought. The rest of the article is at the link above.
