Alex brushed her long brown hair back from her face. She was lost in thought and spent only a little time looking at her self in the mirror before leaving her room in the sorority house and bounding down the stairs to find something for breakfast. It was 530 in the morning, and one of the few times of the day when the house was quiet enough to get anything done. Alex was a senior this year. Freshman year seemed like so long ago, yet she couldn't believe that it was almost time to graduate. In another month, she'd be on her way to Europe for the summer before starting an internship at a non-profit organization in the fall. Most of Alex's best friends were moving away from the Bay Area after graduation, as they all had new jobs and new lives ahead of their own. Finals started next week, and Alex was up early to study before spending one last weekend out on the town with her sorority sisters. She had just turned twenty-one in the fall, so she was all legal - sweet. They were planning on going into San Francisco for the night and Alex knew she better get a head start on studying if she wanted to leave school behind and out of her mind. She sat down and hit the books. After a long day of studying, it was time to go out. Alex and her sorority sisters hung out at the house for a bit and had some drinks before leaving. The left for the city at about 10pm and went to a favorite dance club. They danced in a big group when the got there and then milled about in smaller groups as the night went on. Alex looked across the dance room floor and caught the blue eyes of a short, intense looking boy staring at her. She felt uncomfortable and turned away. Guys looked at her all of the time, but something about his gaze caught her off guard. It was a comfortable, knowing look. Not something you would expect from a stranger. Alex felt a strange tinge of excitement up her spine. She turned her head back to look, but he was gone. The girls danced and drank at the bar for the rest of the night. About an hour before closing time, one of Alex's friends who was from the area ran into a group of boys that she went to high school with. The groups mingled and talked. Alex noticed the blue eyed boy who had caught her eye earlier in the evening amongst the pack of boys. He saw her and smiled. He walked over to her and introduced himself as Jack. He said was a fire fighter in the city. Jack had a confidence and ease about himself that caused Alex to put down her guard. He bought her a drink and they talked as they hung out with the group. Alex really wasn't interested in meeting a boy tonight, as it was one of the last nights out before the end of senior year. But there was something about Jack that she couldn't resist. Before long, the bar was closing and it was time to go. Alex and her friends had to get back across the bay to the sorority house. A part of her wanted to stay and hang out with Jack, but she had too much to do this weekend, and besides he was just another boy. He asked for her number, and he put it in his cell before they all left. Jack called Alex the next day and asked her out to lunch. She had a good start on her studies and she wanted to get away from the serious study vibe at the sorority house for a bit, so she accepted his invitation. They met at a local sandwich shop and sat down to have lunch. Alex thought that Jack had a great smile, and his laugh was deep and honest. He told her about his job as a firefighter and his friends at the fire house. Jack loved being a firefighter and his stories made her laugh. He was interested to hear about Alex's classes and her plans after graduation. After about an hour, it was time for Alex to get back to the house and study. Jack said that he had a few days off in between shifts at the fire house and would love to get together again for dinner or a night out that same weekend, but she had to get ready for finals. Alex hoped that he didn't think she was blowing him off, but said that she'd have to take a rain check. She said that she'd call him later in the week to set something up for the following weekend. Finals week went by excruciatingly slow. Alex had four finals; two of them were oral exams that included presentations. By the time Thursday came around, she was begging for it to be all over. Her last final as a college undergrad was Friday morning. "Thank god that I spent my time this week wisely", Alex thought. Her finals went off without a hitch. Friday night, all Alex wanted to do was go out and drink with her friends and have one last blowout. She had been so busy with school that she forgot about her promise to call Jack. She called him Friday afternoon and said she was going out with the girls from the sorority house that night. He asked her out to dinner for Saturday night. Alex thought, why not? She had so much fun with her friends that night. All of their tests were done, and it was time to let loose. Alex woke up the next morning without a care in the world. Finals were done and she was leaving for Europe soon after spending a week with her family back home in Southern California. She felt good about the days to come. Jack called her that afternoon to set up a time that he could pick her up at the sorority house. They decided to go back out to the city. It can be easier to get around the city by public transportation, so Jack walked up to the house from the train station. He took her out to a fancy Italian restaurant and they talked over a bottle of wine. Alex was happy to get to know someone in town outside of school since she'd be coming back to work here after her trip abroad. She was very attracted to Jack and she felt relaxed in his presence. They went out to a dance club after dinner. They hadn't danced together the night they met, and Alex was impressed that Jack turned out to be a good dancer. They danced mostly to fast songs at the beginning of the night, but as it got later they stayed on the floor for a slow dance. It wasn't something that Alex would normally notice, but during the night he had held her hands in his as the two of them talked and her hands had been dwarfed by the size of his. It gave her a comforting feeling to have his big warm hands surrounding her own. When they began to slow dance, Jack wrapped his hands tenderly around hers and pulled her close. As the song progressed, Alex leaned against his shoulder and he put his hands on her small waist. They kissed. Alex felt a warm flush in her bosom as he pressed his chest up against hers. She was excited and comforted by his embrace. The song ended soon and they went back to the table for another drink. It was obvious that neither of them wanted to just be friends and when the next slow song came up they were back out on the dance floor.
