The blatant overtones aside, something I struggle with in this issue is the mental gymnastics that Lewis has to go through to sell this all-white ball player idea. He premises his want for a private league -- literally, where cities will cough up 10K to build their own team and contribute -- on the reality that Black players are running the game and how he associates everything wrong with ball on not just those players, but Black athletes on the whole. He's rooting showboating and slam dunks and ego throwing as something deeply intrinsic to Black players, and he says that Whites are somehow intrinsically hooked up with the nice, neat "fundamentals."
It's a false association which would easily be unveiled if he were to see White showboaters or Black players who beef up their passing game.
The same thing happens with crime. Implicit bias research suggests that due to the influence of media portrayal, hearing a story about violent crime and leaving the race of the perpetrator unknown, Blacks are disproportionately assumed to have done the crime. Similarly, Blacks have a higher rate of incarceration due to increased surveillance, racial profiling, etc., yet are perpetuating as much as other racial groups. (They're just the ones who are caught.)
In any case, I find it odd that Lewis is pitching his idea so heavily in the South where his idea might have a shred of traction. If he wanted to sell an all-White league, he really should target the states that have the highest levels of White population and racial segregation like Minnesota, Michigan, and Washington, instead of pandering to de facto racial antagonism in the South. But that's just my advice.
