wow there certainly is a lot of disagreement over what seems to be a simple matter of basic hygiene. and my guess is that most of the people who support
the idea that children in high school should be allowed to decide for themselves what is hygenically best are, for the most part, children in high school themselves or of similar age/mentality.
high school gym class oftens involves more than just a quick run around the track.
frequently swimming is involved. in that case, a nude shower should be mandatory
beforehand out of courtesy for the others in the pool. stinky unwashed people don't have a right to enter a swimming pool with others. the pool is not a bath tub. in the real world outside of high school, gyms and health clubs require this of people using a jacuzzi for the same reason. i have been in more than a few 'hot tubs' where other men 'criticized' those entering the jacuzzi who had just taken a shit and not showered afterwards for the same reason-it is unclean, ignorant and disrespectful of the others who use the facility. and the criticism went like this
'get out of the fucking jacuzzi asshole, you just left the shitter and this isn't a bathtub!' nobody cared about their
right to not shower, you see....
as far as modesty goes, or embarassment (and i suppose dick size can be an issue here), the student could face the wall when showering or perhaps shower when others had left the shower rooms. but i sure as hell wouldn't want to share a locker with the 'modest' guy who refused to shower after gym class for whatever reason. if you can't stand the heat (shower) get out of the kitchen (get excused from gym class).
the idea that 'personal freedom' enters into this i find ridiculous. a student might believe that he/she has a 'right' to have head lice. but the school authorities act quickly and force removal of the student if lice are discovered until the unclean infestation is cleared up. and rightly so.
in my high school, the gym teachers put up with no bullshit from students on this matter. if you suited up for gym, you took a shower before you dressed in street clothes again. period. for some students, this was the only bathing that occured in their life....
one last thing...earlier in this thread someone said the military was an exception because that is a matter of personal choice (ie, you join the service if you want to)...we happen to have a weak volunteer army right now. but this can (and unfortunately, probably will) be changed with the stroke of a pen, folks. when i was a teenager there was a draft and thousands of young men were called up to go to vietnam. their modesty about showering in front of others or allowing other men to see their naked penis (oh my!
disappeared with the innocence of childhood when the bullets started flying...
