Alpha male choose to get thier genes into the next generation by mating with as many females as possible hoping some poor smuck will raise his child. They tend to take risk and die early (can't raise children). Of married couples with 3 or more children, one is likey to have been fathered by a wandering alpha. I found it odd that someone made the comparison to alpha males being the jocks in the highschool. I was a huge nerd all through high school in my large all male sporting based school, yet I was respected and looked up to as a leader.
I find it funny that stallion70 was making a point of how physicality matters the most in evolutionary matters. Survival of the fittest means brains too, those who figured out how to make fire in the stone age sure would have lasted longer in the cold and lived to procreate, than those who hadn't.
