Personally, I love this kind of music/sound editing. They are so nice to study/write to because they don't have words or heavy rhythms to them.

Because I am an avid fan, I'll share my take on this genre. I will generally favor a more musical variety of this rather than the "rain on the tent" sound effects mentioned a few comments ago.

So rather than ambient sound, here's my collection of ambient music...
sometimes categorized as "experimental" music:

Philip Glass

Movement 6 "Glassworks" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGFqwa29KDM
"The Hours" film soundtrack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvA7ZcsKFcQ
"Mishima" film soundtrack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGy1ENtNSFA

Max Richter

"On the Nature of Daylight" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rluU6BGpKw
"November" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GHRftsdlVo
"Infra 5" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4Kybxu7fiQ

Eluvium

Static Nocturne (full album) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFC7OyhaqrA
"Ostinato" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3-u2SCgAfs

Hammock

Departure Songs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UlTJR9FY8Y
Oblivion Hymns https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Oab9BepdeE

Hope that inspires! :D

I'm glad to know that you guys are enjoying those websites. One of my favorites from the NoiseMachines is the winter walk. I had never listened to the purring one but it is really nice !

Thunder is a little too much for me. I'm not exactly scared of it but I don't really enjoy it either. I agree with willow though : a soft rumbling is nice. Just like the sound you hear when you press your hands to your ears (apparently that is the sound of the muslces contracting by the way, pretty neat if it's true !).

jjsjr, those are some very nice songs ! I was already familiar with Phillip Glass and Hammock (love "In the middle of this nowhere" from the Oblivion Hymns) and I am listening to Max Richter right now. I don't think I could concentrate while listening to this, but it is really beautiful music. I wouldn't mind sitting and doing nothing while listening to this though !

PS : I guess I'd call a male "crazy cat lady" a crazy cat guy. Hehe

I love the sound of rain. Not too heavy and not stormy, but just a light to moderate shower - even on a tin roof. I hate thunder, but a light/rolling 'rumble' in the distance can be quite soothing.

I had a sticky-beak around the NoiseMachines website that french_toast linked to (thanks f_t, it's awesome!). As a cat-lover (and future Crazy Cat Lady, LOL)* I found this one comforting and just too damn cute! Cat Purr | Your Furry Friend's Noise, Online & Free

(although the real thing is still preferred) >(^x^)<

Loved "Oblivion Hymns". Filling space and mind, inspiring indeed. Thanks!

Apart from the running water it sounds just like my weekly walks here in the northeast US woods. We've had record amounts of snowfall. Just one storm after another, 'bout to beat the all-time mark. No need for a recording here, a "winter walk" is right outside my door. I'll save that one for a hot summer day.

Rain and water running through the gutters and downspouts. I love listening to rain at night. And crickets.

Rain is awesome. =]

I've heard that before. It was behind some radio guy's ranting about the government, like, "what if the government did this and that?" sort of Big Brother thing. Can't think of the guy's name? Also, wasn't that music used in the movie Kick-Ass?

*Prepares to be called a 'fag'*

There is a tree outside of Fuzzy's window. Fuzzy sleeps with the window open all summer. Each morning, the tree is full of little birds chirping and it's the nicest thing imaginable to wake up to.

Aaawe

If anyone calls you a fag for sharing that little slice of happiness I'm gonna hunt them down and punch them in their dumb face.

Oh, and now it's official, this thread has been stamped with a Fuzzy and is now legit. =]

I agree, Fuzzy...to a point. Living among trees in Wiesbaden some years back, summer mornings my wife and I didn't "wake to," but were woken by, a nest of nightingales just outside our bedroom window. A beautiful concert, yes---but with dawn coming at around 4:00/4:30 a.m....?!?

Hey, hold on there just a dog-bone minute, Merc...!!! :drillsergeant::cop: What in Pogo's ever-lovin' blue-eyed world is wrong with being /called/ a fag...??? What's in a name? A gay by that or any other name would be just as warm and sweet and lovable, don't you agree...???

It might have been used in Kick-Ass in some form, but it's also in several movie trailers, like X-Men: Days of Future Past

I'm deaf, and while people think that means I can't hear anything, that is not true. I hear with my hearing aid. Without my hearing aid, I hear nothing. While being deaf isn't a problem for me, I do suffer from tinnintus (ringing of the ears), so I have to have some kind of noise playing in the background to distract me from the ringing. So I usually just play my music, or turn something on tv so I can tune out to the sound.

The luxury of wearing a hearing aid means I can turn my hearing aid off when I hear annoying voices or sounds.

Does the ringing ever cause you to double over and/or grab and hold and cover your ear(s)?

On bad days, I end up putting my hands/arms over my ears. Sometimes I wrap my left ear bud around my hearing aid, switch to T-coil and crank the music up.

I once went to ER, but the docs there were useless. I told them I had tinnitus and that I needed an ear specialist. They didn't get it at all. So I ended up leaving in anger.

Although it is ambient compositions rather than "noise", I always will love, and can relax to the 1980's and 90's work of Brian Eno and Harold Budd.

I also love hearing the rain pour down and the birds sing... But, unfortunately, the tall maple tree in my building's courtyard attracts crows, seagulls, and the nasty little invaders from Europe, starlings, in the mornings, and it is not pleasant at all... Even this morning I woke up to that cacophony, and closed my windows. I can drown them out with this though:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMWeQWGla0Y
Tranquil Birdsong, 11 hours - Birds Chirping, nature sounds, natural sound of birds singing

The YouTube channel that that is from has a lot of soothing "noise" from Nature:

Strangely, I also find the sounds of a long freight train going by, in the distance, late at night. I think it's a nostalgic thing for me... Memories of the town I grew up in. So, thanks for the recommendation of "El Devisadero (The Telegraph)" by Chris Watson. , Brisler: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VjzUXN10_Ao

And, Hoss, thanks a lot for:

Those really bring me home.

I used to be able to hear a mouse fart, but not anymore. The ringing comes on more and more frequently, the stronger rings are usually enough to stop me in my tracks for a few moments, but there are times I feel like i hear a constant ring all the time. Other times I guess I just tune it out without realizing it. Is your deafness attributed to progressive hearing loss or was since birth?

I'm not really knowledgeable about "ambient music," but I know the music on Bowie's Low and Heroes albums is sometimes described that way, and I love those records. They're a mix of instrumentals and songs with vocals. Some of the more "ambient" tracks are really haunting and beautiful.

Those two albums, plus a third, "Lodger" (Wiki), were David Bowie's awesome collaboration with ex-Roxy Music keyboardist and conceptualist, Brian Eno: "The Berlin Trilogy". The ambient songs on them are gorgeous and somewhat haunting. They are my favorite Bowie albums. I treasure them.

"Warzawa" from David Bowie's "Low" album

"Low" - (David Bowie album -Wiki)

"Moss Garden" from David Bowie's "Heroes" album

"Heroes" - (David Bowie album -Wiki)
