Ohh this is a nice thread! Thx!
I have Rain on a Tent and Tibetan Bowls on at the same time. So relaxing!

Is that the throat chanting thing they do?

Although it is ambient compositions rather than "noise", I always will love, and can relax to the 1980's and 90's work of Brian Eno and Harold Budd.

I also love hearing the rain pour down and the birds sing... But, unfortunately, the tall maple tree in my building's courtyard attracts crows, seagulls, and the nasty little invaders from Europe, starlings, in the mornings, and it is not pleasant at all... Even this morning I woke up to that cacophony, and closed my windows. I can drown them out with this though:

Tranquil Birdsong, 11 hours - Birds Chirping, nature sounds, natural sound of birds singing

The YouTube channel that that is from has a lot of soothing "noise" from Nature:

Strangely, I also find the sounds of a long freight train going by, in the distance, late at night. I think it's a nostalgic thing for me... Memories of the town I grew up in. So, thanks for the recommendation of "El Devisadero (The Telegraph)" by Chris Watson. , Brisler: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VjzUXN10_Ao

And, Hoss, thanks a lot for:

Those really bring me home.

Excellent post. Thanks for all links hung dude. =]

Mercurygirl, you could always go back to the classical.....like this....when giants walked the Earth:

I could. Great music btw. However for me it's about freeing the mind from any imagery, emotion, that sounds, music, may conjure. I want to clear the mind, clean slate. When I hear that particular piece of music all I can see is a bunch of apes throwing a bone into the air, i.e., 2001: A Space Odyssey.

You're welcome, MG... This has been a fantastic thread!... I fell asleep to "Rain on a Tent" last night.

Throat singing, also known as "overtone" singing, or "harmonic" singing is not the same as Tibetan bowl playing, as the vocal chords are the only "instruments". It often sounds like the Australian Didgeridoo

"Tibetan temple music is particularly renowned in the west for its two forms of multiphonic singing known as jok-kay (low tone) and bar-da (high tone). In both forms, each of the main chantmasters simultaneously intones three notes, thus each individually creating a complete chord. The Tibetans are one of the only cultures on earth that cultivate this most extraordinary vocal ability. This tradition is also known as "overtone singing" because it is accomplished by learning to control the muscles of the vocal cavity and then re-shaping it while singing, thus intensifying the natural overtones of the voice. In effect, the body is transformed into an effective overtone amplifier."

The Tibetan "singing bowls" are usually metal bowls. They are basically standing, rather than hanging, bells. Their tones depend on size, shape, metal used, and thickness of the bell's walls, as well as how it is played.

Birds...there's nothing like that wall of sound on a late spring morning.

We don't have nightingales, but we have mockingbirds. They literally sing 'round the clock. One summer I was awakened night after night by one that sang from the neighbor's rooftop. And he sang at midnight, 1AM, 2AM, 3AM....

Does the ringing ever cause you to double over and/or grab and hold and cover your ear(s)?
Yes, there are good days and bad days. The good days where I can just put on music for white noise and the music will drown out the ringing, and bad days where I double over, pull out my hearing aid, and question if I am actually hearing things or if others hear it too.

I sometimes ask people to repeat themselves and they deny having said anything.

I used to be able to hear a mouse fart, but not anymore. The ringing comes on more and more frequently, the stronger rings are usually enough to stop me in my tracks for a few moments, but there are times I feel like i hear a constant ring all the time. Other times I guess I just tune it out without realizing it. Is your deafness attributed to progressive hearing loss or was since birth?

No I became deaf from meningitis, at age 2.

Story of my life. I just let it go. I used to get angry with people who would do that and now I focus my energy else where on people who will repeat themselves.

In my case they actually didn't say anything, though. I think I hear ringing sometimes, but when it's not the kind that stops me in my tracks, I think I hear someone say something.

Could it be a matter of not them saying something but thinking they are made a noise?

I'm sure! It still makes me sad that children sometimes have to endure such tough challenges at fragile ages, that's all.

Hmmm. I can see why you would think that children sometimes have to endure such challenges, but honesty, its us being forced to adapt to the hearing world, instead of the hearing world adapting things and themselves to us?

I tend to go for the ocean or rain sounds when meditating. I tried using classical and music meant for meditation and it was super distracting.
Also, That's not a bad idea using ambient sounds for noisy neighbors. Mine sound like baby elephants.

There is an awesome bed and breakfast on Amelia Island called the Elizabeth Pointe Lodge. It's my favorite right on the Atlantic. One of the rooms does not have an ocean view, but there is a small porthole near the bed that one can leave open for the sounds of the ocean. I always request that room!

Also, rain in a tent will always put me to sleep. I love it if I know my tent is waterproof!

If someone is not as much into the "ambient" sound.....
there is a style of rock music known as "shoegaze"

Explosions in the Sky: "Your Hand in Mine"

The Album Leaf: "Window"

Subtractive Lad: "Something like a Star"

Enjoy.
