American troops- fighting for our freedom?

    Hi guys

    I always hear that the troops are fighting for our rights as Americans. I don't understand what that means.

    How are the Iraqis and Afghanistanis threatening our freedom? How are our soldiers fighting for our freedom? I understand that fighting in the revolution was integral to our freedom, but what about now? Is it just rhetoric?

    The government and media use the the saying "American troops fighting for our freedom" to gain public support in going to war with nations that obviously have no intention of invading the usa in anyway. Do you seriously think that there is any nation in the world today that stand up to the usa? Let alone take away freedoms and such. The usa government spend billions and trillions of dollar every year on the military. If people living on the other side of the world can pose a threat to the usa, then i would be dissappointed in our government.

    Also the term is used so that anyone who voices their opinon or dislike of americans going to war will be labeled unpatroitic and shunned. Our freedoms have and will never be threatened or in danger from any foreign power. But the greatest danger to our freedom is our own government. Who do you call when the police act above the law and do as they please?

    it is used as propaganda a lot. I guess it's a theory that nation-granted "rights" rest upon a foundation of self-authority which is ensure by the military, thus "everything" the military does is, in theory, defending our rights...but really that's quite the stretch if you think about it.

    Even though AlQaeda didn't have anything to do with Iraq.

    The Bush Doctrine I do believe says you can wage a pre-emptive war. In order to really get an answer you'll have to ask Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rove and the neo-cons which trumpeted the invasion. I will say maybe it was a Freudian slip when you put the initials of the Iraq operation together. What's that spell??

    We liberated 100's of thousands from their earthly lives, and millions from their infrastructure.

    the question is (like the responses) jejune and nonsensical

    military actions may be necessary in terms of long-term strategy, while not readily apparent or immediately popular, but certainly appropriate with the perspective of history

    War and destuction can always be justified by the unjust. Soldiers fight wars, politicians and businesmen prosecute them. The decline of Rome was bloody.

    Has anyone seen the "Baghdad Firefight" video posted on wikileaks?? I felt like I was playing MW2 with my chopper gunner for 30 minutes...it's pretty crazy that we actually do this kind of shit.

    Generally you don't kill civilians, the wounded, and children in MW2, though.

    By the way, no weapons were actually found at the scene, and the military has "lost" their copy of the tape.
