For those that have made the jump from the US to France before, how have you found the transition so far? How much French did you know beforehand? Can you exist in France with just English and some basic French, or is knowledge of (at least) conversational French expected? How are you finding French society at large and their peculiarities? Would you consider moving back to the US at any point in the future, or are you content with where you are now? Positives, negatives, neutral points? Any regrets?
For context, I'm looking to move to Paris within the next two years as a non-EU European national. I've been stateside for six and a half years now, with most of my time spent in Chicago, and at this point, I've become fully assimilated. I'm in need of change. Reddit might be a better place for this discussion, but I figured that there's no harm in posting it here instead.
Merci!
