America's Forgotten Minority

Talk at the community center in this small Navajo town isn't as focused on the economy as it is in many places off the reservation. That's because the people living on the largest American Indian reservation have been largely unscathed by the recession.

Most Navajos own their own homes, tend not to invest in the stock market and have long had difficulties borrowing money, distinguishing them from millions of other Americans who've suffered from rising mortgage payments, sinking 401(k) retirement accounts and stricter terms from lenders. And with half of the Navajo Nation's work force unemployed long before this latest recession hit, there's not much fear the job situation could get much worse on the reservation.

Unscathed by recession (at least so far) but equally passed by during booms as well, I fear, as your post points out. And the Navajos are generally well off by reservation standards. :frown1:

Are you suggesting that a person's current geographical location is amongst the most important factors qualifying someone to speak on a given topic?

With the exception of what the traffic and weather are like at the moment of speaking I would say it is damn near irrelevant.

NB: it is sunny here, though it looks like it'll be raining within the hour. Three horses, two tractors and a quad have passed my window in the last 10 minutes - must be rush hour!

The advent of the internet allows curious, learning junkies such as myself, to read newspapers online from across the globe.

FWIW: At the very least I try to keep track of the news in places in which I have lived (NJ, MA, DC, VA, GA) or spent significant or pleasurable amounts of time (Tuscany, CA, OR, OH, FL, PA). I also like reading about places in which I have real life as well as online friends (too numerous to list).

ohh for fucks sake!

I am so sick about all the bandwagon RA RA namby pamby BOO HOOING about the damn INDIANS...... they had something "we" wanted and "we" took it, there were more of "us" and they didn't have weapons as good as "us", WE WON! get over it, conquering nations DO THAT!, rome and england destroyed alot of cultures over real estate and to the best of my memory they never gave them casino's or shitty swamps to live in. and of course by "we" and "us" i mean us alive today who have never done anything to the American Indians aside from dump money into their casinos

my grandfather, mom's dad, he proved he and his dead wife were indian to the point of getting a check....she was 1/8 Iroquois and he was 1/12 seux....... and while proud of my racial heritage, i embrace the reality of the situation, they got beaten and were relieved of their land.... THEY DID IT TO OTHER INDIANS!, we did it to them, one day some one will do it to us.

if their pain is too much to live with it, call Bill Austin III at kilpatrick and stockton and tell him you'd like to donate your home to a needy indian family...... did you reach for the phone? Didn’t think so
