So im literally just back from my first trip to the Dam today and was quite amazed by the 'ladies of the night' there! It was so weird because everyone sees it as totally normal over there and its not really taboo at all!? I was happy just to stroll around stoned and window shop but was wondering...

How many of you think its ok to pay for it in these kinda circumstances? The when in rome approach...

I have nothing against hookers, its their cunt and they have a right to sell it if they want, however I do wonder why a guy would want to pay for what he could be getting for free. Although Ive never been to amsterdam Id just like to say I dont think there is anything morally wrong with prostitution. Thats not true. Not all women use sex to get something they want. There are a few men that know if they really need a release I'd be willing to help. Ive also had dates where nothing more than a coffee was bought that ended in sex.

But from my experience, in many cases, I find that the price I pay may not be in monetary terms. Sometimes, I have to pay in terms of time and/or favours - e.g. attention, companionship, etc.

This is not to say I am a "Wham, Bam, Thank you Ma'am" kind of guy; I do reciprocate during the sexual intercourse. After that, I am sometimes expected to "reciprocate" again via social intercourse.

This is not to say I am against social intercourse, it is just that some people I know are just much better at sexual intercourse but are not exactly sparkling at social intercourse.

I for one believe prostitution should be legalized. We all know it happens everywhere and rather than turn a blind eye to it, legalize it so sex workers can be protected. One only needs to look at the Picton case here in Vancouver to see the dangers sex workers face daily. Sex workers would be safe from physical harm and with regularily scheduled medical testing it could reduce the spread of STDs. It would also reduce the number of underage workers.

Talmidge; of course I respect your upbringing and culture backround (Irish Catholic!?) and I know that most countries aren't "libarate" as The Netherlands. But why coming over to A'dam, smoking your brains out in our "coffeeshops" and hanging around in the "redlight" district and questioning that what WE think is normal as if this wasn't normal?

Historical A'dam was one of the oldest ports/harbors in the world with many navy personel around. In the old days, they stayed sometimes many months away of home so many brothels and ladies sutlers filled up the leck of "ladies" company of the saillers (or even guy/gay prostitutes) and was already normal and excepted at this time. Nowadays it's more of an tourist-(trap)-attraction and as long that there are ignorant and more or less prudish tourists who are completly dronk & stonned, this oldest profession of the world will stay around in A'dam because they can't (nor see it) backhome.

If you don't want to learn from other civilized cultures, then stay home and read you bible!

Lacsap1, the only opinion I expressed in those few lines was that I thought it was weird, and compared to where Im from it is! To assume I look down upon your whole country for being Liberal is wrong, its actually a breath of fresh air compared to my home.

I think you got the totally wrong idea and your post was quite hypocritical aswell. You assume because Im Irish I have no idea about other cultures and I probably dont care, that I would prefer to sit around and read the bible all day in my small, backward country!?

Before I read your reply, Talmidge, I was going to reply with a very similar reply - I read your original post very much in the way you say you intended it. lacsap1 got all up on his high horse - with no need whatsoever - I think you made it quite clear you were just asking a 'when in rome' type postulation - hell you even said that!!
I personally think if you agree with prostitution you agree with it - no matter where you are and whether or not it is legal. I assume you smoke dope in Ireland - where it is illegal, but you still do it. If you would not be happy popping down to the Grand Canal (or is it more Capel St and the Quays these days?) and looking for a lady of the night in Dublin then why would you feel OK about doing it in a legal 'knocking shop' in Amsterdam (or anywhere else for that matter)?
