The main reason I buy bottled water is for the convenient totability of it. Not a noble reason, I realize. But, esp. when one has children, having water bottles to dispense is better than dishing out sodas all the time when one's on the go.

In my youthful days of environmental crusading, I used to reuse a water bottle for ages by filling it up at the tap. But I was informed this wasn't sanitary.

The obvious solution for on-the-go water is to fill up a reusable container and wash it frequently. I aspire to this, and sometimes do it, but too often bend to the ease of a batch store-bought disposables. I am weak.

I imagine this is a large (the largest?) aspect of the success of bottled water sales.

FYI - There are only about 7 states that give you back a cash deposit when you return your plastic bottles, glasses, or cans.
Mine has deposits on beer and soda, as well as town centered weekly recycling of cans, bottles, plastic and paper.

We recycle everything including deodorant containers, shampoo and mouthwash bottles. All food containers including sauces, soups, salad dressing, etc.

Over 225 bottles a year. wow, who drinks the 175 a year that I don't. The only time I use bottled water is when I travel, go to sporting events, or on picnics. I am guessing that adds up to 50 a year at most.
