An interesting (yet tremendously sad) thought experiment.

So my wife found a reference to a twitter thread that proposed a very simple question to women. If all men had a 9pm curfew, what would you do? (article about it here).

All of the answers were amazing to me. I like to think of myself as a pretty progressive guy, but all the very normal everyday things that women said they would do that they avoid doing now was eye opening to me.

There is a lot of garbage posted by troglodytes in the comments sections, not unlike what goes on here half the time, so I suggest you avoid reading that part. That said, it's a very interesting though experiment, that's hopefully a wake up call to men in our societies that there are major fucking problems right now and we're doing nothing about.

Anywho, enough of my wind-bagging. I pose the question to you ladies, what would you do?

I wouldn't do anything any differently. I've been harassed and know other women who have been flat out assaulted during daylight hours. Doesn't matter what time is day it is, an asshole is still an asshole and they'll still find a way to force their predatory ways onto others. It just so happens that it's easier to "get away with" in the dark (even though plenty of fuckers who do fucked up shit while the sun is out are still roaming around free as all hell...)

I'm also just not much of a night owl anyway, I prefer to stay home even when there's no threat posed by other humans.

Interesting question though... Gonna read that article now. Including the vitriol. I prefer to hear what these shit-eaters think, gives me the upper hand.

Well just in having the conversation with my wife what got me was the way she approaches almost all situations. It's not really so much about it being at night, it's more about how would you live your life if you didn't have to be concerned with the shit you have to contend with every day.

So for example, we came up with this after talking about it...

“I would feel reasonably confident that if:

-I go to a bar, my drink will not be drugged. I feel comfortable turning away from my drink to talk to someone and then continuing to drink out of my glass or bottle.

-I am leaving a venue/work/friend’s apartment at night, I feel comfortable walking alone through a parking lot to get to my car. I would not feel the need to have my phone in my hand or my car keys at the ready as a weapon.

-I can be alone in my house when a repair man is doing work without feeling uncomfortable or worried about my safety. Further, I can feel comfortable working alone repairing items in another person’s home.”

Those were things she specifically asked me about that I'd never really considered. It's more a commentary about privilege I suppose, as I never would give a second through to taking my eyes off my drink at a bar for example, but I know not many women can say the same thing.

This question has made me realize that I'm more jaded than I thought.

I can't think of anything other than what I already do...

Either I'm seriously jaded, or I'm old at a young age.

Get off my lawn, damnit.

Thumbs up on the thread topic. We don't ever get questions like this. Well, very rarely. Tis appreciated.

*Tips hat*

Alright I'll bite. Would you do the things you're already doing differently? So take the drink/bar example. Do you give any consideration to something being put in your drink while out? Another example my wife gave me was having her keys or cellphone close or in hand when walking to her car alone, in case she needs to use them for defense. It's not to say I'm not cautious when in an empty parking lot at night, because obviously I could get mugged. But I'm certainly not thinking I'm going to get sexually assaulted or kidnapped.

It's not being jaded that you already do all the things you want to do, I guess this is more of a thread for men. It made me consider how differently I approach everyday life to what my wife deals with.

I wouldn't do much different, either. (Keys and phone in hand like you mentioned as an example) I try to be smart and aware, but i also am fortunate enough to live in an area that it's not super necessary to be hypervigilant. When I go out, my tribe has got my back (and vice versa). You dont wanna mess with my tribe.

I would have midnight picnics in the park. For Witchy Babes and their pals.

I would wear my headphones while waiting for the bus. Turned up LOUD!

I wouldn't worry about my friends on their way home, or fret if the "home safe" call was late. *well, not fret as much*

I would wear short-shorts and tube tops year-round after 9 pm. *sigh* I love a good tube top. Hate the commentary.

I would be able to set down my drink.

I wouldn't look down alleyways while walking home.

I would miss the boy at Midnight Monster Mania.

I would let the kids I sit for play in the front yard. *Cuz the best fire-flying is late at night*

My sweetie and I are both night owls. If I'm heading out at night, he comes with me and vice versa. We enjoy each other's company even during mundane tasks, but also he has his concealed carry permit and I do not. We live in a nice area, but the town has odd pockets here and there that are not very nice. At least, by the standards of this state as a whole. Not by the standards of Detroit, where he grew up and where I've spent time.

We were long distance for a while, and I worked until 10pm. I walked home from work. It wasn't through a super safe area. I walked home with my phone in one hand and pepper spray in the other. This wouldn't change if men had a curfew. I'm small. People don't tend to think I'm intimidating. I don't carry a weapon currently. I don't know any martial arts/hand to hand. To people with ill intent I make a pretty okay target. I would always rather err on the side of caution than to be naive and get fucked up.

If I were still living in Atlanta things would be much different. I would not be afraid to wait for the subway, or walk home from the mall. I could lounge in the pool after hours, and I would let my daughter go down to the commons area with her friends.

Bad people are not limited to a single gender, but I play the odds. And the odd ones scare me, and they're usually men.

I took a few self defense courses when I lived there, and I even obtained a carry permit. But even with all of that under my belt, I never let myself feel too secure even in the seemingly simple situations. And the locals even told me that I "lived in the good part of town." Didn't matter. Bad things happen everywhere.

Life is much simpler now. I live in a secure community away from a metro area. I feel more at ease here than I ever have in the city. My daughter, however, still lives in Atlanta, so I still have a worry.

My answer was maybe a bit vague. Women can be people of ill intent just as men can, was what I was getting at. Thus my behavior wouldn't change.

If the mood struck me, I would SOOO wear my expensive ass headphones with the music turned way the fuck up and I'd go for walks with my expensive camera in sketchy areas taking pictures.

And not worry a thing about it

Except for hearing car traffic when I need to

This is the only thing off top of my head I'd feel safe to do if there was a men curfew @ 9 which I'd NEVER do now

I never thought about the headphones thing, because I've never found a pair of headphones that actually got loud enough for me to get off with.

Music must be LOUD. I can't do headphones.

(Yes, I will be hard of hearing way sooner than nature would dictate, and it's all my fault)

Try Sennheiser headphones. Comfy and great sound quality will shut out the world

if you are so inclined, that is

these are my fave pair

p.s. NOT to say that there aren't women who steal or assault. that could happen, sure. however i think i'd still feel safer if i knew all men were in by 9 pm (assuming curfews were kept to) doing that type of stuff. i'd feel more relaxed having headphones on blast with Mozart's requiem and not having to pay attention to the sounds around me except to make sure i am safe around vehicle traffic. i would still probably make sure my camera equipment was safe enough by putting a GPS tile on it. just in case of thieves.

i don't think as far as i go it would matter at all for me about going clubbing or whatever. i wouldn't be less worried about having drinks drugged -- because i am in general the type of person who likes stopping in at my fave local pub right after work for a pint. i do not feel unsafe in these environs like i fear my drink may be drugged.

if i was in my 20s and going to goth dance late night clubs maybe i would be more worried about this and therefore happier to go out after 9 dancing and carousing with my friends with far less worry about drugged drinks

3 am bike rides. Where I live now I can do this safely. My old neighborhood, no so much. There is something so amazingly exhilarating about the semi-flight of letting go of the handlebars and cruising under the stars. With ya favorite music filling up ya ears.

I think it's sad that women still have to qualify that women also commit crimes, can be dangerous. It's a knee-jerk reaction at the potential of offending men. Fuck that. I don't worry about a group of women dragging me into an alley to rape/murder me. I don't worry about a woman overpowering me. I don't worry about a woman trying drug my drinks.

Why are we so worried about offending men? Men should be offended that other men are giving them a bad name.

Not all men are potentially dangerous. But so god damn many of them are.

I specify because some people, including people on here like to act as though most men are bad people, not just some or a minority. It's the same reason I don't consider myself or call myself a feminist. Women aren't saints and I'm not for female supremacy, and that's what the word feminist is misconstrued as often enough anymore. I want equality, not some fucked up supremacy of one demographic over another.

It isn't a knee jerk reaction for fear of offending someone for me. It's to separate myself as different from people who in some ways are just as hateful as those they deride.

Feminists are the reason you have the opportunity to declare yourself Not A Feminist and still have the right to vote.

Feminist will be the people to stand up to a Right Rigged Supreme Court when the vote comes down to overturn Roe Vs. Wade. Because Kavanaugh has said "what goes around comes around"

Feminist will be the people transporting women to states that still have abortion options and women's health clinics.

Feminists will be the people fighting to have equal representation in our Senate/House more reflective of American society.

I don't hate men. I hate being forced to coddle men to spare their egos. Sorry, you fill hurt that I don't true you as easily as I would trust another woman. Maybe stand up alongside Feminists and speak out against the men committing the crime and oppressing women.

I'm aware. Some of the feminists who did that are still around of course and are for equality between people, not supremacy. Which is great. But. Some of the feminists from then and from now are selective as fuck about what they champion. Some of the feminists from then and from now are about female supremacy. Some of them are hypocrites. Just as it is my choice to label myself queer and associate myself with that word, it is my choice to make sure there's a distinction between myself and people I consider hateful or hypocrites or both.
