Has oral sex always been so popular? It seems like every video I watch, and every relationship I have involves oral sex at some time. In fact, the majority of my encounters involve oral sex at some point. Has it always been this way? If no, why has it suddenly become so popular?

Nobody had ever thought of the idea of placing a cock in their mouth prior to X-rated movies gaining a more mainstream public in the 1970s, which is why the 'blow job' is largely a phenomenon of the past 30 years.

Or perhaps that is unadulterated sarcasm and people have been sucking cock since time began, because they recognize a good thing when it comes along.

oral sex has been around forever and is often mentioned in tell all stories of even silent movie stars, but as far as prevention of pregnancy, it can't be beat so possibly that explains all the popularity of more recent decades. Guys gotta have sex and girls seem more willing to give it but without the pregnancy issue interfering. I never knew any guy when i was young who ever even claimed to have gotten a blow job so it does seem that its extreme popularity is a recent event.

Oral sex has always been around, but in the past few years the idea that it is not 'sex' has increased. I think much of it culminated during the Clinton years when many people felt that Monica giving him a bj didn't constitute sex. Plus, in some of the newer teen sex polls, attitudes about oral sex have relaxed significantly.

I am in Athens right now, and images of guys and girls giving head back in the day are on all sorts of postcards and pottery, etc. Looks like they were enjoying it back then too...

I'm afraid all forms of sexuality have been around for ages - it is now more in the open. Oral sex is no different, our grandparents and their grandparents enjoyed it long before we were ever thought of!

For those on a tight schedule:

"The bonobos are best known as the sexy chimpanzees. Their most striking idiosyncrasy is their readiness to use sex as a social lubricant. Any tension within a bonobo group is normally resolved by a quick orgy, in which they all have sex with one another, in all positions and combinations."

So the next you are called a monkey fucker, take it as a compliment!

I agree with luck seven, nothng new under the sun. JUst watched a French movie called the good old days which showed clips of pioneer porn which dated back to the origin of the motion picture. Black and white, jerky movements, silent and grainy with oral sex in every story.

That's exactly what it was like in my younger years: jerky movements, silent and grainy in gorgeous black and white.

As much as a thousand years ago, in Persia, a prostitute wearing bright red lipstick was signalling that she specialized in providing oral services.

I imagine the practice caught on real quick with humans about the first time they saw an animal do it. Although I do know that when Charlie Chaplin's first wife sued him for divorce she tried to get more than she deserved by charging him with "perversion" for the act of going down on her. Chaplin scandalized America when he defended himself by saying "All married people do that." It must have caused quite a stir in pre-Kinsey America. I think America's puritan past makes a lot of this stuff seem new to us.

Good post, felix20! This came up in another thread, but I definitely think there is a more lax attitude about oral sex. Sure, it has been around forever, but the idea of it seems much more cavalier now. Oprah did a show (I know, guys, roll your eyes) on 14-15 year-old girls giving dates BJs at the end of the night... on their first date. Part of it might be the Clinton/Monica story, part of it might be thinking oral sex is safer in terms of avoiding STDs, part of it may be the increasing number of kids who want to remain "virgins"... but still get some.

What was most disturbing to me about the Oprah show was learning that a) a lot of the kids, girls AND guys, talked about peer pressure to have sex (if a girl doesn't go down on a guy, she's not in with the in crowd) and b) there was no feeling on the part of most of the guys to even offer any sort of reciprocation. I'm all for sexual equality but I wonder how some of those girls are going to feel a few years down the road. It's definitely something I will talk about when I have kids, so that guys learn to respect the girls and their choices and the girls learn to better respect themselves.

P.S. On a side note, thanks for reminding me that at 30 I am definitely considered "older people", felix20.

We certainly enjoyed oral in the sixties/seventies, but my crowd anyway considered it to be as intimate and personal as intercourse. I think today's culture has made it somewhat more casual. Maybe similar to how we used to view petting.

In the Victorian Age, these things were not spoken about. In fact, it was taught to only have sex in the missionary position. In the 18th century upper class ladies just didn't do certain sexual acts, so their husband with their wives approval engaed in "lewd" sex with females who were not part of the upper class like slaves, servants and prositutes.

In some states, oral sex is still offically against the law even for married people. So until the sixties, it just wasn't talked about in America.

But it has been here as long as humans have lived on earth.

No, Jeremy, she didnt lie. She is probably very young, like yourself. Each generation discovers sex and believes it is the first generation to fully appreciate and enjoy it.

Yes, oral sex was very popular before Clinton. It was popular in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's.

I still enjoy receiving it in the gym shower room (each stall has a curtain) on a regular basis, and Im 52.

If you take care of your health and your body, you will still enjoy it 30 years from now and beyond.

play safe and use good judgement. soap and hot water is essential. so is a sense of humor!

best wishes to all the younger guys, straight , gay or otherwise.

As I understand it girls used to be more likely to screw than give head. They thought giving head made them seem more slutty - that oral sex was dirtier than straight, and anal dirtier still. The approximate era being post birth control pill / pre AIDS. Before that - sadly - for many women sex was something to be grudgingly endured rather than enjoyed.

These days oral has lost its stigma. A lot of factors are involved, fear of AIDS (oral is perceived safer), our former President's oh so public situation and feminism's drive for sexual equality are a few.

It's a good question that probably deserves a much more complex answer than this one.
