Definitely go slow! I would recommend, of course, lots of lube, I personally like the water based silicone.
A couple days of play first will help, using fingers, maybe a plug, work up to a wider dildo.
I know I'm not ready until he (hubby) can get at least 3 fingers in me and he's about 6" girth, the length didn't seem much of an issue once he got in.
