I can't always say that I agree with much of what Andrew Sullivan says, but I read his blog every day because he discusses issues that I care about.

I came across this on Tuesday afternoon, and here's the first chance I've had to post it here.

For those who might not be aware, Charlie Crist is the (somewhat) moderate governor of Florida and appears on many people's short list for McCain's VP pick.

I don't know how much attention it will ganer though.... conservative blogs in the past have claimed that Texas Gov. Rick Perry was caught by Mrs. Perry in bed with a man and that never went anywhere..So...

Crediting Andrew Sullivan for "outing" Charlie Crist in May 2008, is like giving me credit for outing Rip Taylor just now.

The Broward New Times, for example, carried the story back in February (link), and before that, in 2006 (link). The number of former partners and eyewitnesses that have come forth over the years leaves no doubt.

You should try outing Richard Simmons, from what I have heard he is still in the (huge walk-in) closet.

Maybe Crist went to gay bars, but are there really rumors that Christ did?

And in Florida, for God's sake?

There are really rumors that Jesus was gay. The man went to his last dinner with 12 guys.

Was Jesus Gay?

Exactly, andrew sullivan, didn't out Crist. Rumors about Crist's sexuality are long standing. He denies being gay, and so far there's no proof, so whatever.

I disagree. In as much as one can "prove" the sexual orientation of a third party (quick -- prove I'm gay!), Crist's orientation is remarkably well-documented:

  • Multiple partners of his have come forth, who don't all know one another, yet have describe Crist's personality, body, and sexual tastes consistently.
  • Non-partners who've witnessed Crist at gay bars are able to independently corroborate one another regarding details such as Crist's drink preference and the kind of clothes he wore when bar-hopping.
In the most mathematically rigorous sense of the word, these consistent testimonies don't constitute "proof"; but the preponderance of evidence is overwhelming.

I would accept the partners' accounts if they produced phone records, texts, letters, pictures - anything. Crist isn't batman :)wink:), it shouldn't be that difficult to produce some tangible evidence.

Comparing The New Times to professional journalism is like comparing an IPod to the sound system of your favorite dance club.

The New Times is an entertainment/lifestyle weekly more interested in reviewing the local music scene, movies and area restaurants. It is picked up, free of charge, from boxes found near the downtown nightlife district (and probably on the many college campuses in the area). Most of the classifieds are for prostitution or pill doctors (pages and pages and pages).

The editorial/news staff seems to be comprised almost exclusively of college undergrads affecting "hip", smarmy attitudes distasteful of everything (while publishing 10,000-word screeds) and columnists who rant and bitch into the dark. It has exactly zero influence on the political scene because no one reads it for more than a guide to cheap eats and whores (excuse me, beautiful, exotic masseuses for discrete, professional gentlemen).

As an Anarchist (which I am), you'd think it would be right up my alley. But it is so soporific, so sensationalist, so "yeah, dude!" that even I don't bother with it, and I'll read almost anything.

Crist's sexuality is one of the worst-kept secrets in Florida, for sure. But anyone who gets his/her political information from an 8000-15,000 word article printed between ads for head shops and strip clubs really, truly doesn't care.

I rarely agree with Andrew's perspective, but read his blog daily because his topics interest me. And he is one of the most influential political thinkers and writers on the web today, perhaps because he generates so much controversy while writing so damn well (most of the time at least).

I would accept the partners' accounts if they produced phone records, texts, letters, pictures - anything. Crist isn't batman :)wink:), it shouldn't be that difficult to produce some tangible evidence.

When and if he is seriously considered (beyond pundit speculation) as a serious candidate for McCain's running mate, it will all come out.

Florida is in many ways still a conservative, southern state. But the West Palm Beach/Ft Lauderdale/Miami/Key West corridor, Tampa/St Pete and Jacksonville are moderate, live-and-let-live kind of places (mostly: this is not Boston or San Francisco).

I hope you know what you're getting yourself into. Florida's pretty but fucked-up.

NJ is ugly and fucked-up and cold from October to May. (meaning we have temps in the 40's throughout those months.)

Seriously, is anybody is reading Andrew Sullivan any more? Wow. He was on my daily must-read list until it became apparent that he could take ANY topic and turn it into a gay manifesto of some sort. And I'm gay. Andy can invent a correlation between the price of broccoli and same-sex marriage court rulings, and that's when he's not on a roll. He's become a laughingstock, but some people still worship this very weird, self-contradicting, self-absorbed dude. Go fer it if you like it, but don't expect coherence or consistency. He's all over the place.

Personally, I find that his most annoying trait to be his continual ability to be shocked...shocked by things we've all known for years. This affectation is happening less and less.

When he finally put down the Kool-Aid and realized the the president and war he was so fierce to defend were truly indefensible, I knew he got it...finally.

Uummmm. Yeah, Mr. Old School here stills read Andrew Sullivan. I'm a big fan of many of his political viewpoints. When he trips off into gay spin I just skip over those areas. He's a great blogger and has set a high standard for other bloggers to write up to. Much of what he writes is leagues better than commentary I run across, say in the NY Times. Then again, I have no taste. I also like radio commentators Larry Elder & Doug McIntyre.
