Both really.

The first proposition is an observation of two early famous British gay effeminate men and what we now know about their inner lives. As an American example, I don't know how happy Liberace was at home (he had a b/f and a lot of jewels, so maybe he was) but he sued for libel in London when a tabloid paper suggested he was homosexual. And won!

The second is a rationalision of mine. Effeminacy may be gay men throwing back in straight society's face and subverting straight traditional gender roles as much it is an acceptance of and aquiescence to those roles. Hope that makes sense.

Yes. It makes perfect sense, but I somewhat disagree with your second theory.

The truth is that gay men's brains have some female qualities, particularly in the areas of communication and emotion, so it's only natural that gay men would have some behavioral characteristics that most would label as "feminine". When some people ask why some gay men have effeminate qualities, I love telling them the truth: Because that's who they are.

I had to see this guys actual audition. He's horrible! He wasn't singing and wasn't rapping, he just sorta talked funny. For the record that is not a New Jersey accent. That accent is pure Brooklyn Jewish.

LOL. Oh my God. After seeing that, I have to believe that the "audition" was not real. It was staged for entertainment. It had to be!

Ian is rude, obnoxious, and obviously untalented—gay or straight. He deserved to be escorted out. If you cannot accept criticism and behave this poorly in public, how can you possibly expect to be considered for being mentored into a professional career, let alone have one. This is not a gay issue. This is an issue of being able to act appropriately as an adult. He deserved what he got.

Exactly, be has "straight" or as "campy" as you like but act like a respectable grown up. If you audition for Idol....well, you know what to expect.

The "third sex" argument? I disagree. Most men are capable of understanding other human beings. Not all straight men are uncomprehending violent louts. That's just as much a cultural stereotype as the image of gay men as effeminate. Though, undoubtably, there are men who seek to prove their masculinity that way. But note, they are seeking to prove, or an extreme on the spectrum.

Anyway, have you read the 2,699 comments on the vid? I clicked on the link and read the first few screenfuls. There's quiet a good exchange of views going on there. He is acknowledged as being verbally witty. The dodo remark, Word War 80, work permits. But the pouting and gesticulating gets the thumbs down.

Third sex? No, I wasn't making that argument. I was just quoting the research that shows a difference between gay male brains and straight male brains.

Yeah, I read a lot of the comments and noticed the same thing. There's also a lot of what could be interpreted as extremely anti-gay language, but I have a feeling that, among younger people, the words "gay" and "fag" are developing divergent meanings. I've got the impression that a lot of them use "fag" to describe what they see as a very effeminate, obnoxious gay man, while "gay" is used to describe what they see as a "normal" gay guy. Has anyone else noticed the two words evolving in that way?

Well, ain't that the premise of the whole show? I dunno, 'cos I don't watch it.

Well, no, I think the premise is that these are real people who are auditioning, not actors. I'm suggesting that Ian wasn't a "real" contestant; he was perhaps an actor. I can't say that with any certainty, of course.

Nah, I don't think he was a plant. A total fake. I think they took advantage of a deluded guy. They must audition thousands, and pick the ones they show by how much "reaction" they will get. Whether that's genuine talent or sheer outrageousness. Hey, he's been broadcast, utubed, and now discussed here. How much has he been paid? Nothing, I expect. But he got his 15 minutes.

Luckily, mine has been long forgotten. Heh, heh.

This might seem homophobic but I thought this guy sounded like those old SNL skits with Mike Meyers called "Coffee Talk". Maybe peeps have a hard time with jewish guys who sound like jewish women.

I think you could be onto something. Maybe the anti-gay people in America saw him as a "fag", while the people who aren't anti-gay just saw him as a funny or obnoxious character.

By the way, I didn't think your comment was homophobic at all.

I think people who go on that show should be tested first to judge their reactions, and only be allowed to audition if they agree to (possibly) lose gracefully. But.... that ain't gonna happen.

Embarrassing and pathetic - as far as I'm concerned I couldn't give a shit if he was a total flamer or a completely straight frat guy - he was making a fool of himself, and that transcends sexuality and stereotypes!
