I've thought on this some today (just b/c I am home sick) and have come to a conclusion. Granted this is only my opinion, so for what it's worth.
I believe one of the biggest problems with internet communications is the absence of the personal tones and inflections that we get from face to face or telecommunications. Messages are decoded by the reciever and so it is very easy for the typed word to be miscommunicated or misinterpreted. The sender's intent can easily be misread. Sarcasm and sarcastic humor is one of the most difficult forms of communication to decode in written form. One person may be intending to be funny, and/or the reader may take personal offense (as if the sender were typing the message directly to him/her.)
Also, we all use words differently... and some people are more easily offended than others by words they may not be used to hearing. Some people LOVE the use of smileys, italics and bolding to emphasize their communication; others rarely use thse devices to help the reader identify tone inflection.
Hickboy talks about respect for one another. I couldn't agree more. And by taking messages with a grain of salt, a little levity, and less personalization could reduce the amount of anger that may be experienced.
