I don't believe ANY pres who's been in office in my lifetiome would have just sat back and watched this happen. Not Nixon, not Reagan, not Ford, not Carter, not Clinton.

You can keep pretending that republican still means conservative, and that conservativism really exists anywhere, and thousands of people dying to protect your right to remain ignorant really isn't a very big deal, is it? They're just brown ppl anyway. Whether they're in Louisiana or Iraq, brown people dying just doesn't bother most [white] people very much. Obviously, MY point of view would be quite different.
Zora, I have always said that had it been Houston instead of New Orleans the federal response would have been totally different. As I recall when Bush finally did something, he visited the evacuees in Houston first.

There was a horrible political decision made here. Louisiana has a Democratic governor and a Democratic Senator because of.....New Orleans. Enough Democratic votes in New Orleans cover the Republican edge in the rest of the state. Bush wanted a smaller more affluent (some day) New Orleans. He was willing to spread out the African-American vote over several cities and states to reduce the political power. Also Bush wanted the mayor and governor look bad and Bush did.

Bush is that calculating and willing to steer the events following Katrina to gain permanent political gain. The loss of life doesn't bother Bush as long as it isn't Republican lives. And Cheney was right there helping orchestrate the whole thing.

True I can't prove all of this. However as the disaster unfolded I told my wife exactly how it was going to pan out and why and things fell into place just as I predicted they would. Why oh why can't the media and people with some intelligence not see what was and is still going on.

BD, we just disagree implicitly. I don't believe ANY pres who's been in office in my lifetiome would have just sat back and watched this happen. Not Nixon, not Reagan, not Ford, not Carter, not Clinton. You do? Well, it's not really something worth a good debate, because there's no way to prove either point. It's information for me though, because it's something I take as obvious, and apparently there are some who don't. Shocking, really.

I started bitching about corruption in this administration back in 2000. By 2003, I remember posting HERE that the right to say "I told you so" would be a grim reward for the deaths of many and the loss of our government as we've come to know it. Well guess what? It's still true. You can keep saying "no big deal" and "business as usual" while our country falls to shit and you don't lift a finger. Madame Zora, why must you ruin your good points with bullshit like "brown people dying just doesn't bother most [white] people very much"?

As you know, a jiu jitsu training partner and friend of mine was killed in combat in Iraq in December. He was white. I have many friends over there right now. I don't usually reflect on the racial and ethnicity of my buddies, but those there now that I know include many whites, a lot of Latinos, and some African-Americans. The grief which I and others will feel should another be killed will not be diminished in the least by their color.

It is also erroneous to assume that most of the personnel are "brown". It is simply not the case. But it is irrelevant what color any of the troops are anyway. What is important is that they are Americans, our brothers and sisters, and that they are serving their country and making sacrifices in doing so. I am not speaking to Geo II's misadventure in Iraq (other than to say I am dismayed and disgusted), but the service personnel there and elsewhere deserve our unqualified support and appreciation, AND our hopes for their success in a very fucked up situation (a technical term I use from time to time).

My buddy was killed in late December and was near to the 3000th American fatality in Iraq. I visited icasualties.org yesterday and saw that more than another 300 have died since. I did not need to know their color to feel the tears flowing from my eyes as I read their names.

Please, Madame Z, please, for me.....

Meatpackingbubba, you shouldn't be offended by Madame Zora's comments. They were meant to be ironical.

I also share Freddie's views. Had Katrina threatened Houston, Bush wouldn't have taken so long to react.

In Canada, in an emergency, an official request for troops is made by the premier (the first minister of a provincial government) to the prime minister (federal government). If the situation is very serious, I believe the federal government can do without the consent of the provincial government (see War Measures Act/ Emergencies Act).

Meatpackingbubba,
I am terribly sorry for your loss. Never did I intend to insinuate that every life lost isn't precious, especially to those who are close. I didn't know about your friend, and my comment was toward an attitude our government projects- not a specific event or person. Most of my family members have served in the armed forces as well, and I was certainly NOT commenting on racial prejudice within the military.

What I was referring to about Katrina was {what I perceive} as an executive decision to allow something horrific to continue for far too long, for very much the reasons Freddie outlined. It was an intentional decision to take the opportunity to rid New Orleans of "undesireables" and redistribute the political voting base, which had traditionally been democratic. The worse it got, the more opportunity for Haliburton to get larger contracts for rebuilding, which is exactly how it happened. Notice how much is being spent on aid to the displaced poor- very little. The highrises and developments being built are certainly NOT for the benefit of the former residents.

In Iraq, while we have lost soldiers of all races, none can deny that the greatest burden of loss is among the Iraqi people, who have lost over a half a MILLION, mostly civilians. Each of these losses is equally tragic to me, that's all I was saying. Being a "brown person" myself, I find it fairly offensive that these losses of life are not treated as equally tragic to our own soldiers. They are to me.

This in no way diminishes my grief for our own soldiers, who are only doing what they feel they owe in service for their country. I wish our leaders took their service as seriously as they should. bush does not mind wasting the lives of over 3000 servicemen and women, I just want them home, alive.

Damn you, NIC! I was going to start the same thread! Though I think all the ingredients are there for satire, what with the scene looking like something out of an action flick, and it happening under the noted jurisdiction of none other than the Governator.
Yeah Gov Shwartzo could have been involved as he's into stuff like that, but I'm sure some bushies were involved
