Anaheim officer mistakenly kills man on his front lawn - Los Angeles Times

An Anaheim police officer chasing burglary suspects shot and killed an innocent 20-year-old man who heard a commotion and emerged from his house early Tuesday holding what authorities said was either a broomstick or a shower rod.

The officer encountered Julian Alexander on his front lawn and shot him twice in the chest about 1:30 a.m.

"He was a good kid, trying to protect his house," said Michelle Mooney, his mother-in-law. "And the police, instead of asking questions, they just shot first. Somebody has to be held responsible for this."

He was a newlywed and soon-to-be father.

An unarmed friend of mine was assassinated by the local police force. The murderer of a cop who did it was exonerated despite the fact my friend was non-violent and unarmed.

I'd like to see all their asses thrown into the general population of any maximum security state prison for this type of shit. I fucking hate cops.

My younger brother was sent to a Cat A prison for three months (on remand) after police fabricated evidence against him. All requests for bail were refused, despite the fact that he had no prior record. He was acquitted at court (the Old Bailey, no less) and was subsequently awarded more than £100k in compensation for false arrest and imprisonment.

Thank God the British police didn't carry guns in those days otherwise he probably wouldn't be here now...

I was thinking about this as I was watching CNN discuss the government tonight, it's really disheartening the way elected officials, police, CEOs, etc... are simply above the law. What's the point of having rules if you can wiggle your way out of 'em?

Time and time again this goes on with the cops killing murdering if you will unarmed and sometimes non-violent men.
Why?
They felt threatened.
You never hear them say "no he didn't have a gun I just shot him just case he did".
Why are they very rarely convicted of murder?
I don't understand why they aren't.

My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. That's sad and terrible. :frown1:

My first reaction was that he should have kept his butt in the house. Seriously, my momma taught me never to run towards a commotion. This advice has served me well on many an occassion. SOP-Standard Operating Procedure, in this situation is to turn out the lights, if it is dark out, peek out the curtains, then call the cops. Running out into a melee and confronting an intruder with a broomstick is never the appropriate option.

^Amen, it's like horror movies where one person says "Hey, what was that noise? Maybe I should investigate" and the other person says "I'm gettin' the fuck outta here."

Unfortunately his boldness cost him his life. The only thing I don't understand is that the cops were chasing burglars. Did he think that someone broke into the house and stole a mop or shower bar?

I agree with njqt466.Why go in to the fight, especially since his house wasnt being intruded? On the other hand, being a Policeman isnt easy or safe and if i were in a situation where i felt threatened,id rather shoot and be charged but live than have a flag given to my family....
