Another gym shower thread - this one's different, I swear

So the other day my wife and I were having a conversation about showering at the gym and it came up that I shower naked in a common shower room with other guys. She was shocked that guys just shower next to each other and it's a normal thing. Every gym that I've been to has had one common room for showers, a few have stalls for some of the more modest guys. I was a little surprised that women's showers weren't the same. Apparently women's shower rooms at this gym are all separate stalls.

So my question is really more for the ladies: are all women's shower rooms at most gyms stalls only? Or are any of them open as most men's shower rooms are?

Funny you mention that. But at my gym that was totally the same. Women got cubicles and men one room.

I've seen many schools where the girls' showers had private stalls, but the guys' were open. I deplore the trend toward private showers for guys. In my opinion, it's crucial for a guy's psyche to hang out naked with other guys. Group showers forever!
I don't know why the girls' showers were more private. You'd think it'd be the opposite, since guys are famous for putting down other guys cuz of dick size ( another deplorable situation).

At out 24 Hour Fitness we have open shower stalls in the front with no curtains,,but sepaated by opaque partions...kinda of a combo of both types of showers. I find this the ultimate set up to show off if you want ,,cause u can sort of hide if u want or flaunt it if you feel like it

My wife and I had the same conversation. She too was shocked that usually men shower beside each other in one common shower room. Apparently this is why things changed in the men's shower room at my university. When I was a student there, it was all open showers (one room with about 9 bradley shower towers - no stalls). Now it's about 12 stalls (with curtains) lining the walls of the shower room with 3 Bradley shower towers running down the middle of the shower room. When renovations in the men's locker room were done a few years back, the guys had to use the women's shower room (the women had 2 of them for some reason, so the genders were still seperated). Some of the pansy ass wusses demanded that the men's shower room have privacy stalls as well after seeing that the women had them. The university caved in, and that's why there are stalls today in the men's shower room. The feminization and shaming of young men sadly marches forward...

Where I went to boarding school...guys had a big shower room with 6 shower heads, girls had separate little stalls. Those showers were designed in the 1960s and were probably based off a design that dated back to the 20s...when modern plumbing was introduced. I'm sure the gang shower was a matter of utility...it would have been expensive to create individual stalls. A luxury like that was considered appropiate for the delicate female psyche, but young men were tougher and more practical. I'm can imagine talking to a 1920s architect: "Why don't you supply boys with separate shower stalls?" Architect: "Are you crazy? We can't afford all of that haberdashery. Besides, I bet they enjoy the camaraderie and talking to each other about sports and other nonsense in the showers. You know how boys are."

Of course, those days are over. The health club I go to has little shower stalls for men and women - I know because I walked the building while it was being built. We are rich now, and can afford such haberdashery as tiled shower stalls. Women are no longer known to be delicate, so whats good for them is good for the guys too. Equality, you know. Besides, we have such things as homosexuals these days that actually enjoy checking out their fellow men. Throw in a few cell phone cameras, Abercrombie and Fitch ads, paranoid parents, and Viagra and its just safer to avoid male nudity altogether.

I had thought that too..'monthly privacy' for women...

I was startled to go back to my old college to discover the 'gang showers' (or as we called them 'gang rape showers' were now 'stalled' as well..baffling.

Ditto the trough urinals are now 'stalled' and the opened door toilets (you sat, you shat, you got on with your day) now all have doors....

I have belonged to a lot of health clubs and I've seen it all. From open to open and stalls, to just stalls. My current gym has the glass partitions but no doors. I think a big reason why women want privacy is not because we get periods, but because we are generally ashamed of our bodies. I definitely an not speaking for everyone but most women, thanks to magazines and music videos have a lot of body issues that men generally don't have. Have you ever heard a man tell one of his friends that he doesn't want to go to the bar because he's bloated? Or ask if his jeans make him look fat? I think we are just more self conscious than guys.
