It was not 'in some cases', it was in all cases.

Then why would people be depressed from no-outside stimuli like myself and that the medicine makes them feel better? If it's the placebo effect, then why do I also notice the side-effects. How does that explain OCD and/or anxiety disorders and the depression that stems from that. Do you really think OCD is a made-up disease like Kevin Trudea says that acid reflux is just a fake doctors note/

I believe the medicine works regardless of what you say or anyone else has found b/c I can tell a change in what has happened for me personally, not counseling ( that always seems to go nowhere for most people I know unless you actually find a great pyschologist) or any type of changes in my life. I've been depressed since I was 6 years old, raised in a normal middle-class white American suburban family, no causes of depression.

I think even if you say that the medicine is useless, a sample study population will always have errors. But that's just my opinion. I'm in no way trying to anatagonize anyone, so please don't read this as a personal attack.

You could ask your doctor about agomelatine (new.) I won't bother to describe it. Wiki gives a brief rundown -
Agomelatine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Then google Valdoxan.

add
Wellbutrin can actually increase libido without affecting ability to perform.
That's bupropion. It's similar to agomelatine - norepinephrine and dopamine agonist - but it has a rep for causing convulsions/seizures if the dose is not right. At one time, was taken off the market. I don't know what it's present status is, though, obviously, it's being prescribed. I presume it requires monitoring. Also, I'd think, liver function tests, too.

Spencer,

Yes, the sexual side effects are debilitating for SSRIs. It takes forever to come. The resulting sexual frustration didn't help my depression a whole lot.

I was once on Reboxetine--I think that it's only available outside the USA. Apart from the fact that it made me incredibly jittery, one of the side effects was that I could orgasm without a hard-on. This rather intriguing feat confused both my GP and shrink. I eventually ditched such pills altogether.

By the way, one of the best sites I've found for a discussion of such issues is CrazyMeds. It proclaims itself the "one-stop portal for the mentally interesting".

Interesting site, headbang. Psychotropics seems a troublesome, though interesting, science. I thank my lucky stars I don't need one or other. For those that do let's hope they find one that works with the fewest side-effects.

I will say this, and commented here before. I had a friend give me a handful of generic anti-depressants (low grade) for the sake of orgasm control... I can control orgasm normally for awhile, but certain positions/timing I still shoot...but with those... An hour and a half, then nod off, another session, and so on and so on. I can eventually cum with half of one... But recall taking one on an empty stomach, and fucked over and over and over, and never orgasm'd, but just leaving my partner basically unwalkable was pretty fun. There must be some prescription market derivation for premature ejaculation in that formula..., because as long as you are turned on... You can fuck for hours on that stuff. I never noticed a decrease in libido, for what it's worth.

(disclosure: I do not condone taking prescription medicine w/out a doctor/consultattion...as a libertarian I prefer to inform thineself....course I recall the questions my friend said his doctor asked him...and think it's harder to pre-qualify a cough medicine prescription vs what he was asked).

Anyways... I can't recommend it enough if that's what you are after. It's not an upper as I believe you need to take it for weeks to feel the effects.
I know antedepressants are supposed to cause a decline in libido, and I've been taking them for a while. Just wondering what other sexual side-effects of antedepressants that people here have experienced.

for some reason, I seem to be almost immune to sex and then suddenly like hypersexual to almost anything.

You answered it: the placebo effect.

If it's the placebo effect, then why do I also notice the side-effects.

Just because these medications don't cure depression, doesn't mean they don't have side effects. It's just you're getting the worst of both worlds, they don't do anything positive and they do a whole bunch of negative things.

How does that explain OCD and/or anxiety disorders and the depression that stems from that. Do you really think OCD is a made-up disease like Kevin Trudea says that acid reflux is just a fake doctors note

Proving anti-depressants don't work doesn't have any bearing on the diagnosis of depression, OCD or anything related to psychotic illnesses. My mother was severly depressed for several years and it was real, so I know about depression.

The theory is that you have gotten better because because you felt like the drugs were making you better, and this positive outlook was enough.

I think even if you say that the medicine is useless, a sample study population will always have errors. But that's just my opinion. I'm in no way trying to anatagonize anyone, so please don't read this as a personal attack.

The studies on anti-depressants and their effectiveness were statistically sound studies, and based on large enough cohort sizes to deal with sampling errors.

I have had similar problems. I will go weeks without wanting to get off. Then I get really horny, jerk until my arm cramps for one orgasm and then immediately lose interest in sex for a few days. I was prepared for the lowered sex drive but I was astounded by the random horniness. Kind of like an oasis in the desert...

Prozac killed my sex drive from day one. I was still able to function normally, just had no desire to do so. As the dosage went from 20mg to 60 mg my ablility to cum decreased. The ONLY way I could cum was through intense masturbation and that took forever, if at all. When 60 mg of Cymbalta was added to the mix my ability to cum was GONE. I was longer depressed, but also no longer sexually active. Eventually I was diagnosed with low testosterone. This is when the real fun started. The testosterone sent my sex drive through the roof and my cock was rock hard all the time! It was just like being a teenager again, but with one small exception. No matter what I tried I could not cum! Finally I gave up all the antidepressants. About 2-3 months later I was able to have a normal sex life. Still as horny and hard as a teen all the time, and able to cum like a teen again.

My doc tells me that according to the drug companies only 5% of those on antidepressants will have sexual side effects, but in her experience it is more like 50%. Some may be effected when they start the meds, then it goes away. Some may develop after years of use or at higher doses. Doc says it is likely all will develop some degree of sexual disfunction if on the meds long enough or at high enough doses. For me the sexual disfunction was an acceptible trade off for the depression. After over ten years on the meds I found them to no longer effective, so I gave them up. The testosterone replacement therapy has given me more releif than the antidpressants ever did. Many men are being treated for depression when in reality they are suffering from low testosterone. So, if you are suffering from depression, please think about testing your testosterone levels. NOTE: All men should get a baseline reading of their testosterone levels in their 20. If you develop problems later in life (around 40) this information can go a lone way in getting treatmant.

This was my exact thinking, that maybe I suffer from low Testosterone too. Because I know that can be a cause for depression-like symptoms too.

That was my experience, too. Sometimes it took so damn long to cum that I just have up from the frustration.

They did nothing to curb my libido. They just curbed my ability to do something about it.

I just went back on anti-depressants ... I needed to do it; it was a smart decision ... but the sexual side effects are, once again, very frustrating.

I haven't really cum in two and a half weeks I've been on them. They helped my anxiety right away and have lifted my mood, but here's the new weird side effect: instead of feeling my orgasm, my cock oozes out a ton of precum; my body goes through the contractions of orgasm; but I don't feel the pleasure in it. AAAAAAARRRRGGGHHHHHH!

before i started taking antidepressants my doctor informed me of serveral side effects which i should be aware off :
1. upset stomach for the first week
2. possibility that i could put weight on
3. lack of need or want for sex. taking longer to get hard and taking longer to cum.

i have been on them for aprox 5 months and the only side effect ive experienced is number 3. i hardly have the desire for sex. however when i have a hard on i can nrmally maintain it but it can take me up to 30 mins to actually come. as i dont have sex or orgasms as often as i did before taking the pills i do find that the orgasms are stronger and i shoot my cum further.

i am lucky that my boyfriend is understanding and when im finding it hard to actually get hard enough it helps when he stimulates my prostate.
hope this info helps.

Has anyone had negative experiences with Wellbutrin XL. I just posted another thread about my current ED concerns. I've been back on it for a year and am really having problems getting/staying hard due to a low interest in sex. XL is not supposed to interfere, but I'm not ruling it out as a possible cause.

I was on Wellbutrin for a short time close to ten years ago, when I was first on antidepressants. I was jittery and anxious on it, but wasn't on it long enough to notice sexual side effects. But my sense is that sexual side effects are more widespread than the medical literature would indicate.

At first I thought it was great because I could last indefinitely but then as the blood levels of the medication peaked I was unable to. I've tried a few different SSRIs but Lexapro was the only one that did it to me.

That was my experience, too. Sometimes it took so damn long to cum that I just have up from the frustration.

I 100% agree. I had to switch medications because of it.

There went my dream of being the next big thing in porn. lol

Antidepressents are a necessary evil for me. Without them I was near catatonic, suffering severe OCD, anxiety attacks, insomnia, severe and ongoing nausea and zero libido. I was unable to hold down a job and was in the pits of dispair. I've had depression since late childhood and have been on aropax for the better part of 10 years. Since then, my libido has returned, I've gained and maintained full time employment, returned to study, met a long term partner, etc. Yeah my libido waxes and wanes at times, but it's better than the alternative... a living hell. I have to be on them for the rest of my life, but that's a small price to pay for reasonable sanity.

Well Sir.
Also had depression since my dad passed away during 1963.
I'm on Ecotrin, Talomil, Co-Tareg, Librium, Zolpiden and a few more. (Prescribed by a psyciatric professor)
I've been on several other for years and the right cord hasn't been found as yet.
Its really not pleasurable!
May all without depression, daily go on their knees and thank the Heavanly Father for normalness !

Huds to all !

if you haven't discussed the problem(s) of side effects with your doctor, you should.

if your antidepressants are prescribed by a general practice or family doctor, consider seeing a psychiatrist. their specialty is medication to treat depression and mania.

I agree with previous posts. I didn't have a decline in libido, I just couldn't climax AT ALL during sex, and had a little bit of numbness in my penis (it felt just like rubbing my arm or shoulder or any random body part). I became so frustrated during sex that I just didn't want to do it to avoid all the frustration. I got off the meds and went back to normal about 2 months later.

I've taken venlafaxine in the past and the only problems I've had is delayed orgasm, it would take me ages to cum. Sometimes I couldn't cum at all or would give us during sex because it was too tiring.

Sometimes this can be a good thing, I was a 'god' the first time I had sex with my current girlfriend. But at times, it can also be very frustrating.

I've never had problems with erections though.
