It just generally hurts the working class.

Oh, and smallman? Those cheap goods come at a price. Namely higher unemployment, and in particular fewer manufacturing jobs. Except of course at McDonald's.
[post=331544]Quoted post[/post]

the current unemployment rate is 5%, which is the natural rate, and jobs in the manufacturing sector of our economy have been shrinking for years -as are themanufactoring sectors of pretty much all the developed countries. by the way, we produce and export more steel now than at any point in the last 20 years, we just need less workers to do it.

the only real consquence is that no one can expect to work a 9-5 schedule at one company for the rest of their lives.

What country are you from, anyway? The truth is, I didn't watch the concert (though I have burned several recordings from it); but I still know it took place. Secondly, everyone that I know personally followed, or at the very least was aware of, the G8 meeting.

As for not caring about the outside world: I will be the first to admit that Americans don't think about the outside world as much most other countries do. But you have to understand that our own country is larger, if less populated than the EU, and for many Americans living on the East coast following events in California can seem just as relevent as a Frenchmen following events in Greece. That coupled with the fact that we still have isolationist impulses left over from being physically seperated from the outside world for most of our history. Yes, it is a shame that more Americans following foreign affairs sporadically if at all; but mark my words, they will be increasingly interested as our world "shrinks". Just another consequence of globalization, I guess...

Also, sorry for the name calling.

What? No defending how Bush reclassified fast food jobs as "manufacturing" jobs?

I will be the first to admit that Americans don't think about the outside world as much most other countries do.

No kidding! Many Americans also know very little about their neighbour to
the North. 'Is Toronto the capital of Canada?', 'Who is your Prime Minister?', 'I just love your French money!'. :grr: Ignorance and indifference are bad qualities.

Get out of your bubble! Read up on what is going on in the rest of the world, read foreign papers, learn another language. Knowledge is power!

There is more to this world than imports/ exports and natural resources.

But then again the core of the whole live8 thing was to create AWARNESS.
and I guess it even happened here on a website for large penises.

Mission Accomplished.
Does this "awareness" accomplish anything, though?

If that's directed at me, I already read mostly foreign papers. As for learning another language, I guess Im competent in spanish; but I refuse to learn anymore. It has nothing to do with being American. It has everything to do with having inherited the Anglo-Saxon tongue and its inability to master any language other than English.

Again, when you assume you make an ass of you and me...well, mostly you.

Titan,

It's not a matter of not caring.

God helps those, who help themselves.
The US can't spend Billions of dollars saving the world.

Who saved the US during the Great Depression?

When you mow your grass, do you mow all the neighbors lawn's down the road?
After all...it is your neighborhood, and they haven't gotten to it yet.

You'll spend all your time helping the world, but your own back yard is neglected.
You won't get your trees trimmed, weeds pulled, or anything fertilized for the winter months.

America has an agricultural backbone, which later developed into an auto one.
BUT...the old Farm mentality kicked in.

You Fill your own silo's first...THEN if you have extra grain, you share it with the neighbors.

- there are lots of starving christians in Africa that god ignores, i think the old 'god helps those...' is just a saying that wealthy greedy people tell each other as to not feel guilty that they'd rather have their billions kept in a bank where noone will ever use them for anything good or bad than to help their fellow humans

God helps those, who help themselves ...to a higher more spiritual mindset. Suffering is not only a bad thing as what it often yields is growth, knowledge, wisdom etc.

(I think that's the argument).

Not really! If you travelled (outside of the US!)-got out of your bubble- and read more, you would see that this is definitely not the case. Open your mind
a little, Dr Dilznick. Don't judge a book by its cover.

I also agree that we talk too much about poverty in Africa when there is so
much of it elsewhere.
