I had a few male friends in graduate school who were surprisingly affectionate. Some of them required a bit of drinking beforehand, but I became no stranger to arm-over-shoulder couch-sitting and couch-leaning. It was weird the very first time it happened, but once I got over my silly reaction, I actually enjoyed it. We're social creatures and we respond well to loving pats, holds, and gestures. I think it also strengthened our friendships; I can respect another guy who's not so flagrantly homophobic as to interpret a long hug (at least 6 seconds for oxytocin release) for a ride in the sack. And now that I'm getting older and totally consumed by work, I appreciate some lovin' wherever I can get it!
