Did Warner Brothers Just Kill HD DVD?

In addition to Apple, Warner Brothers is now going to throw its weight behind the Blu-ray format for high-definition disks. Warner has been the only major studio to publish its movies in both Blu-ray and HD DVD formats. Today, the studio announced that from now on, it would only issue movies in Blu-ray.

Until now, the war between the formats has seemed like a standoff. Of the big studios, Disney, Fox and Sony have backed Blu-ray. NBC Universal and Viacom back HD DVD.

Richard Greenfield, the media analyst with Pali Research, wrote that this marks the end of the format wars: “We expect HD DVD to ‘die’ a quick death.” He noted that NBC Universal has not committed to backing HD DVD exclusively. Viacom’s studios — Paramount and Dreamworks — have an exclusive deal with the backers of HD DVD, but Mr. Greenfield wonders if there is an escape clause.

Mr. Greenfield further wonders if consumers, on hearing this news, will return their Christmas HD DVD players and exchange them for Blu-ray devices. I’m not so sure that many people pay that close attention to Hollywood. But I certainly wouldn’t spend money on an HD DVD player until this all sorts out.

why spend $600.00 for blue-ray player when you can buy HD-DVD for $200.00

you can copy HD shows off TivoHD and burn it to DVD+R in the HD-DVD format

    Blue-ray is MPEG 4 and HD-DVD is MPEG 2

    Ha.....my 78 records....my 45 records...my 33 records...then all vinyl. Then yes VHS and now DVD.

And let's not even discuss how many thousands spent on PC's that could no longer handle the load.

So, now it's Blu-Ray??? I thought just a couple months ago, it was going to be HD-DVD, because both Walmart and "the porn industry" had chosen HD-DVD. Arrrrg, I'm so confused.

You have to remember in war it is often diffcult to tell who is actually winning until the end. Earlier this year it was still very unclear and even this last summer it looked like HD-DVD was gaining traction. But apparently outside the U.S. Blue-Ray was the favorite. HD-DVD is cheaper to produce BUT has much less capacity.

    Earlier last year:

Adult film industry embracing HD DVD

    But now:

I read an article once that went exactly the opposite way of sargon's article... a bunch of porn producers were upset with HD DVD since it made their stars' flaws all the more apparent.

Well everyone in HD anything realizes all your flaws and faults are amplified on HD anything. No one is forcing the 'porn producers' whoever they are to film in HD. If you can't take the heat get out the kitchen.
