I'm amazed at this whole thread, while I don't particularly care, I don't understand how this is allowed to exist whereas if someone were to say "does anyone know any hung zulus?" "the ones with the big lips tend to be really hung"

i dunno just funny how some sweeping racial generalizations are ok and others aren't :-D

I'm Irish on both sides of my family. I was really surprised in college when I heard there was something called the "Irish curse".

You, like the majority of dickheads on here, are not Irish.
You are not Irish on either side of your family - you're American.

The "Irish Curse" is the thouands of dumbass Americans who descend on Dublin each year convinced they'll be welcomed because of some idiotic fantasy about beng Irish.

You're American. Yes, that sucks big time but get used to it.

While I agree that people whose ancestors arrived here in the 1860s still go around calling themselves "Irish", even if they ONLY married people of the same sort of lineage, when "from Irish stock" is more accurate, is a bit far-fetched. There's nothing in sonofjohn's post that indicates that. He says he's Irish on both sides. There's nothing that says one way or the other whether his parents aren't still Irish citizens, or even the he himself wasn't born there, etc. The ones who really look most like "dumbasses", are those who make blanket statements, with few, to no, facts to back them.

This is merely a curious question, but how come Americans consider themselves Irish/Italian whatever if their grandparents or whatever moved there years n years ago? My mum moved to England from Ireland and my dad's parents moved over in the 50's, but I consider myself English. Sure i'm proud of my Irish heritage but i'm quite obviously not Irish. Is it an American thing?
