Just want to seek some advice on the hairstyle I should have. I'll try to describe it as comprehensively as I could, I hope you can imagine how my face looks like (I'm really sorry but I'm kinda shy to put my photos here).

I've tried googling but there doesn't seem satisfactory answers to my inquiry, partially because I'm not sure what to call the type of my hair is. It's... erect? Like, it's straight up when it's long. It's not soft, it's hard. It doesn't lie down, it just stands straight. It's like the hair of cat that is scared. Like this (http://www.goosecam.de/img/katzenbuckel.jpg). You see how the hair on the cat's back is straight up. Yes, my hair's like that.

So, when it's long, the side hair will be straight horizontally, and the top hair will stand straight vertically. So, it doesn't look good. So, I asked the barber to trim the side hair and so far it looks good. But the problem is my top hair. I can't use enough gel to make it softer and just lie down like other people's hair. And when I use gel enough to force it down, then my hair doesn't look natural anymore. Perhaps my hair is not long enough to be able to crawl on my head rather than standing up.

So, what kind of hairstyle would you suggest me have? I hope I could get some answers.

I'm not a hair stylist but from the sounds of it you have coarse hair. If you want to soften it a little use some fabric softener and mix in a little hair conditioner and rub it into clean hair and wrap with plastic wrap and sit under a hair dryer for a half hour or just let it penetrate your hair for an hour in a warm place. Use a hand held hair dryer on a hot setting to dry it out after you have rinsed and use a vented brush. It would be best if you consulted a professional who not only could see your face shape but feel the consistency of your hair to make the best possible suggestion for you.

Fabric softener? Never thought of that. I will try it (in case you're not joking but if you are please inform me before it's too late). But I don't have a hair dryer. Is letting it be in a warm place necessary? What if I just let it be in a place with room temperature?

Thank you.

No I was not kidding. (I rarely kid) I don't know how long your hair is but but about 2 TBL of fabric softener to 1 1/2 tsp of hair conditioner works for short to medium short hair. Heat helps but If you don't have a hair dryer then wrap your hair in plastic and then aluminum foil and let your body heat activate it. Leave it on for an hour and rinse well.

My hair stands on end, too. Very thick, very coarse. Happily it is also well behaved, growing naturally into a pompadour.

When I cut it short, I also have a number of choices ranging from a burr, through a buzz cut, a high and tight, and my personal favorite a military styled flattop. Hair like ours is ideal for short or spiked styles.

The exact style you should choose will vary depending on your specific face shape. The idea is to establish a silhouette that approximates an oval. My face is round, almost circular. So, I need to elongate my face...my hair is kept short on the sides and longer on the top, which elongates my face. I also wear a beard, which further elongates my face...and gives me that desirable oval shape.

Men can also include a somewhat squarer/angular shape into the mix, too...choose a hairstyle carefully, and you can easily achieve this.

Here is a chart that illustrates the basic face shapes, and some short styles that work with each shape. It's a classic chart, the sort that used to hang on the wall of most barber shops.

you should go for the shaved off sides and back cut but long hair on top. since youre hair is probably similar to mine its much more manageable when u have longer hair ...but you dont want long hair on the sides or back since it just sticks straight out. it also depends on what kind of style you like. try looking into the european cuts. they tend to be fairly short on the sides but long on top. europeans tend to have thinner hair but you can make it work with time and getting used to products. I use hairspray an crew fiber. I always blow dry my hair once i get out of the shower. I blow dry it in the direction i want it to stand. it takes practice getting the style you want since hair doesn't grow fast. good luck!

OK, will definitely try. Thank you! It's around one inch long on the top and very short on the side. Maybe your measurement is sufficient.

LOL, I had to google each hairstyle that you mentioned. I tried the burr one before, but definitely didn't look good on me. Out of all, I think the military one is the manliest one, looks nice on the eyes too. My face is definitely round, resulting from my fat phase before, but now my whole body is getting more defined but my face seems to never slim down. So, I guess that's it, my face is round. As you advised, I need to make it oval, so my decision to let the top hair grow is right.

I think I know how to show you the shape of my face. Attached are the sketch, taken using Camera 360 app. I hope it can give you the illustration of how my face looks like.

My hair is definitely like this at the moment, but the top hair is standing straight and as NudeYorker said, it's coarse. I think he's right. Can you elaborate more on European cuts? I tried googling it but the image search doesn't seem helpful.

I'm no hairstylist, but I've had my own fights with my hair. Different hair type though. mine can get a bit wavy and poofy - I'm no fan of gel either.

What's your hair like when it's wet/drenched in the shower? have you tried drying it while holding it down? Have you tried other hair products like creams? (Creams make your hair less crusty and gel-like) Can you make your hair lean instead of lie down?

To keep the sides short without frequent visits to the barber, you can buy a hair trimmer. It might take some practice, though. You might end up going to the barber so he can rescue you. lol. I think if i had your hair type, that's what I would do (to save $$$).

Im pretty sure styling gel won't hold your hair if it's course. You need to use styling putty.

Or Joico I-C-E Spiker is called "hair glue" and will hold the crap out of any hairstyle

When it's wet, they stand down but only because it's a bit long now. But when it's short, come wet or dry, it will still stand straight, that's how strong my hair is lol. I hate it.

How do you make your hair lean?

I do have a hair trimmer, just not confident enough to do it on my own. When I used to have a hairstyle where I just shaved my whole head, the hair trimmer really saved me from the many trips to the barber. But now, I'm letting the top hair grow, I go to the barber once in 3 weeks to trim off the side and back part of my head.

Ohh, will try to find it in Dublin and try. I am in need of buying a hair product to hold down my hair.

Here's a thought. Stop trying to make your hair do something it doesn't want to do.

I mentioned, earlier, that my hair does the same thing. It stands straight up. Well, most people go to shops and salons, and pay good money to get that kind of volume...TRYING to make their hair stand up and look like yours. You and I are blessed, but like most people, we want what we don't have.

Your hair stands up? Well, find a style that stands up! I mentioned spiky haircuts earlier. They're supposed to stand up.

Actually, do they have proper barbershops where you live? I don't mean some unisex clip joint like "SuperCuts," but the kind with an old male barber who's been in business, cutting men's hair, for years.

Find a proper barbershop and request a consultation. Call first to make sure you're not coming during the busiest part of the day. If he charges you at all, it won't be more than a few dollars, but it is usually free.

Talk to him. Tell him your goals, what you wish to do, what "image" you wish to project, and here's the trick...let him talk to you about options. Talking is good, but listening is just as important. Your goal is to *collaboratively* figure out something that will work for you.

If you are satisfied with the cut he's suggested, and let me repeat that, ONLY IF you're comfortable with his ideas, get in the chair. Being picky is a good thing.

Yes, I take hair very seriously.

Thank you really for the thoughtful reply. I understand that spiky hair can be good, it's just I'm not sure how and what to do with it. But your suggestion of going to an experienced barber just for consultation is good. There is one in a street going to the city center, I will go there. Thank you!
